Sports Report for Wednesday, 7-4-12

Real Radio 860 WLBG Sports Report: 7-4-12

Local:

  • The season came to an end for the Laurens Little League 12-U All-Star Baseball Team last night as they lost to the Greenwood-Abbeville team up in Spartanburg last night by a score of 8-0.. Laurens kept it close until the top of the 6th inning as they only trailed by a score of 1-0 before the Greenwood Abbeville team broke it open… Congratulations to them on a great effort and my thanks to Stephanie Aylesworth for getting me some of the information on the team.

Braves:

  • Yesterday I mentioned to you that you fans had the opportunity with your votes to chose the final member of both the N.L. & A.L. teams and that Chipper Jones and Michael Bourn were among the 5 N.L. finalist you could vote for.. Today I need to correct that.. Yesterday Chipper was named to the N.L. squad to replace injured Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp.. Now that he has made the team, he is encouraging fans to go to mlb.com and vote for Michael… Tomorrow is the last day to do so.
  • Now turning to the game last night, Chipper Jones played like an all-star as he went 5-5 with 2 doubles and 4 RBIs in leading the Braves to a 10-3 win over the Chicago Cubs.. Braves trailed 3-1 going into the 5th inning when they put 5 runs on the board and then added 4 more in the 6th for the win.. Michael Bourn and Martin Prado also had multiple RBIs for the Braves…  Braves and Cubs face off again tonight in Atlanta.

Greenville Drive:

  • The Grenville drive finished their series with the Charleston RiverDogs with a 3-2 loss.. They had a 2-1 lead going into the bottom of the 8th when Charleston put 2 on the board and held the Drive scoreless in the 9th to take the win..  The Drive return home for a brief home stand and the Rome Braves will be the opposition..  The game will start at 6 so that they can have a fireworks show after the game.

NASCAR:

  • After last weekend’s race, the Sprint Cup Series standings look like this:  Matt Kenseth remains in 1st place with 633 points.. 11 points behind him is Dale Earnhart Jr. who moved up one spot this week.. In 3rd is Jimmie Johnson 23 points behind the leader Kenseth..  Dropping from 2nd to 4th is Greg Biffle 25 points back and in 5th is Denny Hamlin 68 points back
  • Can you believe Richard Petty turned 75 last Monday.. It’s been almost 20 years since the King last raced but he is still popular even with the younger fans.. He spent his birthday hosting his team’s annual open house.. That may help explain his popularity among those who never saw him race.
