First some news from the world of college athletics.. The University of South Carolina’s official athletic web site says there will be a press conference today at 2 pm to announce their new A.D. .. Numerous sources are reporting that it will be current Head Baseball Coach Ray Tanner.. Tanner did serve as an assistant A.D. during his tenure at N.C. State.. Tanner has hinted that one day he would like to move into administration full-time.. Looks like that day may be here… Sources also say that Associate Head Coach Chad Holbrook will be named the Head Baseball Coach at South Carolina. 

Braves:

  • For you Atlanta Braves fans who have been going through some withdrawal symptoms, your wait is all but over as the Braves get back in action tonight down in Atlanta as they host the N.Y. Mets in a weekend series… By the way, the Braves start the 2nd half of the season tonight with a 46-39 record 4 games behind the Washington nationals in the N.L. East. 

Greenville Drive:

  • The Greenville Drive and Augusta Green Jackets were rained out down in Ga. last night… The Drive are scheduled to finish their current series in Augusta tonight then move to Charleston to take on the RiverDogs the rest of the weekend. 

NASCAR:

  • NASCAR will invade the New Hampshire Motor Speedway this weekend with the Nationwide race taking place on Sat. and the Sprint Cup race on Sunday.. The Sprint Cup standings going into this weekend have Matt Kenseth still on top with 676 points and Dale Earnhart Jr. still in 2nd 25 points behind him.. The top 5 are rounded out by Greg Biffle 44 points behind the leader Kenseth, Jimmie Johnson 58 back and Tony Stewart moving up to 5th 90 points back. 

This & That:

  • One last reminder that the Laurens YMCA will be having a wrestling and Pee-Wee camps Tues.-Thur… The deadline to register for these camps is this Sunday.. Call the Y at 984-2621 for more information.
  • The Laurens Athletic Booster Club has started sale of Century Club memberships.. Cost is $150 and gets you 2 reserved seats at all Raider regular season home football games, a reserved parking space for football and 2 all-sports passes for all other regular season Raider athletic events..   • Also an advance notice to Red Devil football fans that season football tickets and parking passes will go on sale starting July 24th at CHS… I have more information about this and the Laurens Century Club membership on postings at wlbg.com in the Between the Lines section under sports.

And finally, its only 42 days until the start of high school football season on August 24th when Laurens host  BHP and Clinton host Gaffney.
