Sports Report for Monday, 7-16-12

Real Radio 860 WLBG Sports Report: 7-16-12

Braves: The Braves hosted the Mets over the weekend and it was a good weekend as the Braves swept the visitors from N.Y.

  • In Friday’s game the Braves took a 7-5 win.. Braves catcher Brian McCann did not play as he was with his wife as their first child Colt Michael was born.. His replacement David Ross filled in nicely as he had a 3 run homer and the old man Chipper Jones also had a solo shot.
  • On Sat. the Braves rallied for 3 runs in the 8th as they defeated the Mets 8-7.. Jason Heyward had a 2-out single to drive in the winning run.
  • Yesterday’s game was scoreless going into the 5th inning when the Braves erupted for 6 runs in the bottom of the inning in a 6-1 win to complete the sweep of the Mets… Freddie Freeman had a had a 3 run homer in the inning after 2 were out.. The Braves now have a season high 7 game winning streak.. The Braves have tonight off and will host the Giants in a 3 game series starting Tuesday night.

Greenville Drive:

  • The Drive did not have as good a weekend as the Braves.. On Friday night they finished a series with the Augusta Green Jackets down in Ga. with a 3-1 loss.. They then drove to the coast to start a series with the Charleston Riverdogs.. . Saturday they took a 9-6 win but then dropped yesterday’s game by a score of 11-5.. The Drive remain on the coast for 2 more games with the RiverDogs.

NASCAR: NASCAR was up at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway this weekend.

  • In the Nationwide Series race on Saturday, Brad Keselowski took the win with Kevin Harvick finishing an unhappy 2nd.. Seems he was cut off by a car 33 laps down driven by Amber Cope which caused him to slow down and Keselowski took the opportunity to pass him. .. Austin Dillon, Sam Hornish Jr. and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. rounded out the top 5..
  • In the Sprint Cup Race yesterday, Kasey Kahne took the checkered flag.. Looked like Denny Hamlin was going to win the race but a miscommunication between him and his crew chief late in the race cost him time in the pits he could not quite make-up.. Seems he wanted only 2 tires but got 4.. Hamlin finished 2nd not quite able to catch back up with Kahne.. Clint Boyer took 3rd, Dale Earnhart Jr. 4th and Brad Keselowski 5th

This & That:

  • Probably the worst kept secret in Columbia late last week was that the Univ. of S.C. was naming Head baseball Coach Ray Tanner as the Athletic Director… The only surprise may have been that he will begin his new duties August 2nd..  His contract for the AD job runs through June 30th, 2017 and he will make a guaranteed salary of $675,000 per year along with a car, country club membership and a few other perks.. That is actually a pay cut as he made $800,000 per year once you add in endorsements and camps.
  • Now the 2nd worst kept secret in Columbia is that at the 11pm press conference today Tanner will name the new head baseball coach at S.C. and I’d bet my house that it current associate head coach Chad Holbrook.

And finally, its only 39 days until the start of high school football season on August 24th when Laurens host  BHP and Clinton host Gaffney.
