Raiders Hope to Learn From 0-7 Loss to Easley

Raiders Hope to Learn From 0-7 Loss to Easley         9-6-12

The Laurens Lady Raider Tennis Team hosted Easley Thursday night with high hopes and two region wins behind them but fell quickly to the Easley Green Wave team.

“We lost to Easley 0-7 last year,” Raider Head Coach David Corley said after the match.  “Last year we played strong at Easley but placed third in the region after Hanna and Easley; with J L Mann now a region opponent, our hope this season was to get the win because we know Mann and Hanna will be tough.”  The Raiders fell to Mann in the first round of last season’s play-offs.

The Easley team took quick wins on almost every court Thursday night; Ellen Young (#5) played the Raiders’ closest match, falling 4-6, 2-6.  “Ellen played well.  Her strokes lacked the pace they needed, though, and Easley’s girl simply kept hitting the ball back,” Corley said.

#1 Sara Kalyn Croker lost to Abby Cook (3-6, 2-6), but forced the Easley #1 to many long rallies, each player hitting with tremendous pace.  Croker picked up some games on Cook, who beat the Raiders’ Amanda Dominick 6-2, 6-0 in their opener last year.  “I think that if SK looks at how well Amanda played last year and focuses on her opportunities for growth, this loss can serve us well.  There’s time to improve within the season, and we’ve already gained some from last year,” Corley said.

#2 Rebecca Corley played her best match of the year but fell 2-6, 1-6 to Katie Hopkins.  “I know it seems strange to say that we played our best tennis in a loss,” Coach Corley said, “but I was really proud of Rebecca, Sara Kalyn, and Brittany (#3 Brittany Horner).  Rebecca played a fantastic match.  She took three games against a really strong opponent.  The pace Hopkin sput on the ball was amazing, but Rebecca took her to deuce multiple times.  These scores aren’t as one-sided as they seem.”

Horner fell 2-6, 1-6 in a match that saw Madison Galloway constantly lob the ball.  “Brittanyhandled the lobs well, but she just hadn’t seen that before – certainly not the number of high balls that pushed her into the fences,” Coach Corley commented.

#4 Kathleen Horner lost 0-6, 1-6 to Alex Price, and #2 doubles (Bailey Rush and Moriah Campbell) dropped 1-6, 3-6 to Leah Young and Krista Day.

Croker and Corley played a 0-8 pro-set loss to Easley’s #1 and #2.  “I told the girls that Easley is behind us and ahead of us,” Corley said.  “Monday is another match [the rain re-scheduled Greenwood on the Laurens City Courts], and our goals haven’t changed.  We want to take two from Greenwood and finish in the top half of the region; we have to learn and improve.  The season is still young; we will face Easley again,” Corley concluded.
