Laurens Defeat Woodmont in Tennis on Thursday

Raiders Gain Victory Over Woodmont, Finish Rain Matches

LDHS Lady Raider Tennis defeated Woodmont 5-2 Thursday night to move to 4-3 in region play.

Junior Sara Kalyn Croker (#1) played strong against Woodmont’s Helen Campbell, going up 6-1 in the first and taking the second set 6-0.Campbellhit numerous drop shots, drawing Croker to the net, but Croker played consistent ground strokes to overcome the Woodmont #1.

Laurens’ # 2 Rebecca Corley defeated Meredith Kiser 6-3, 6-1.  Coach David Corley said that he has been pleased with Rebecca Corley’s recent play – “She was our player of the week last week because I can see her thinking.  She’s playing the right shots at the right time.  She’s playing with pace and running opponents around the court.  Tonight, her serve really proved an advantage.”

Brittany Horner (#3) won her first set 6-0, but then dropped to a 2-5 deficit in the second.  “I’m not sure what happened,” Coach Corley said. “Brittanywas up a set and down one game; then, I looked back and we were down.  We talked on the change over; I think it was just lack of focus.”  Regardless, Horner came back to win 7-5, holding off Woodmont’s Emily Mayes.

#4 Kathleen Horner played the Raiders’ closest match, losing a 4-6, 7-6, 10-12 match to Sidney Matthews.  “Kathleen played hard,” Coach Corley said.  “She was in the entire match.  Matthews has moved down from #3, so Kat was playing above her head to a degree, but she held tough.”

#5 Ellen Young fell behind 0-6 in the first, but regained her composure to pull ahead in the second.  Woodmont’s Toni D’Antonio came back to gain the 7-5 victory.

At #2 doubles, Bailey Rush and Moriah Campbell went up 6-2 in the first and took the second 6-4.  “They let them [Daisy Spence and Lexi Hall] back in a bit,” Coach Corley said.  “We still get trapped in no-man’s-land and fail to move our feet,” he added, “but we find a way to win.”

#1 doubles added to the Raiders’ the win as Croker and Corley took an 8-2 pro-set victory over Campbell and Mayes.

The Raiders also finished two matches from their rain-shortened early season match against Woodmont.  #2 doubles completed their victory, but Ellen Young fell in her match tie-breaker.  The earlier match now stands as a 5-2 Raider victory.

The Raiders play Hillcrest Monday at 5:00 p.m. at the Laurens City Courts.
