Raiders Shut Out Westside 7-0; Move to 6-3 in Region
LDHS Lady Raider Tennis dropped only five games in the first six matches to move quickly ahead of Westside in Anderson Tuesday night.
#1 Sara Kalyn Croker blanked the Ram’s Jenny McCullough (6-0, 6-0) to begin the Raiders’ rout of Westside. #2 Rebecca Corley allowed Breeanna Hall only one game (6-0, 6-1). #3BrittanyHorner dropped two to Jennifer Young (6-1, 6-1). #4 Kathleen Horner and #5 Ellen Young allowed Caroline Cain and Taylor Eskew one game each (6-1, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-1), and #2 Doubles Bailey Rush and Moriah Campbell took a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Shuniqua and Shaniqua Simmons.
# 3 Brittany Horner and #5 Ellen Young moved up to #1 Doubles, giving the Raiders a slight scare as they took the first set 6-1 but then lost the second 4-6, forcing a match tiebreak as darkness fell on Westside’s unlighted courts. The Raider pair finished off the win with a 10-5 tiebreak victory over McCullough and Hall.
The Raiders moved up quickly at all spots, taking advantage of the less experienced Westside squad. “Darkness almost got us, and I was afraid Brittany and Ellen were going to give away their doubles, but it’s important to work for next year in these run-away matches. They played well and got the win – even though it became hard to see the balls,” Raider Coach David Corley said.
The Raiders travel to Greenwood on Thursday (9/27) in a schedule change. “The match at Greenwoodis critical to us,” Coach Corley said. “We beat them 5 – 2 early in the season, but it took us four match tiebreaks to do it. Any of them could have gone the other way. Thursday will show us what we’re made of and could assure us a play-off spot with a win.Greenwoodwill want this win.”
