Raiders Gain One Against J L Mann on Senior Night
Lady Raider tennis’s only senior, Rebecca Corley, celebrated senior night by pairing with Sara Kalyn Croker to gain the Raiders’ first and only victory in three meetings with JL Mann (6-3, 6-4). The Raider team fell to new region foe JL Mann Tuesday (1-6) after first facing Mann in a play-off loss last year.
“It was great for Rebecca to get this win. She didn’t play well in her singles [1-6, 0-6 to Caroline Powell], but she found her stroke in doubles. SK [Croker] really hustled and covered the court well. Getting a win against Mann is a real boost for us,” LDHS Tennis Coach David Corley said.
Rebecca Corley has played for the Raiders since seventh grade, moving her way up from #2 doubles in her first year as a letterman to #2 singles and #1 doubles this year. Coach Corley said that Rebecca has been a strong team member, improving every year and going the extra mile to take lessons and play in the off-season. “This year, especially,” Coach Corley said, “Rebecca played determined tennis – thinking and moving. She has really played her best tennis this year.”
Rebecca honored her favorite teacher, English teacher Debbie Simpson, before the game, saying that Mrs. Simpson encourages her students to think for themselves and to be individuals.
#1 Sara Kalyn Croker gained one game in her 0-6, 1-6 loss to Mary Hunter Hyche. #3 Brittany Horner lost to Lauren Allen 0-6, 1-6, and #4 Kathleen Horner fell to Caty Brown 3-6, 5-7 in the Raiders’ closest singles contest. Horner played consistent ground strokes, fighting off Brown’s spin by covering the court and hustling for balls.
#5 Ellen Young gained three games in her 2-6, 1-6 loss to Maddie Howard. “Ellen has played well and gained some ground in our matches with Hanna and Mann,” Coach Corley said. #2 doubles, Bailey Rush and Moriah Campbell, faltered to an 0-6, 1-6 loss to Ellen Featherstone and Ellen Stahlman.
The Raiders face Hillcrest, the other new addition to the region, on Thursday at Hillcrest. A second win over Hillcrest will guarantee the Raiders a spot in the post-season. The Raiders defeated the Rams 5-2 in their first meeting.
