New Plastics Plant Now Underway

A Groundbreaking Ceremony was held yesterday morning forLaurensCounty’s newest industrial plant. A Chinese company, Uniscite, is building a plant in Owings Industrial Park to manufacture plastic film fabrication. The event took place with the backdrop being the immense new automatic transmissions plant nearing completion for the German company ZF.

At yesterday’s event, Fang Wang, the General Manager for the new plant, addressed the local and state officials gathered on the site, along with investors visiting from China. She spoke in Chinese, her words translated into English by Assistant General Manager Lina Sheng:

“On behalf of Mr. __ and Uniscite, I welcome and thank you for everybody’s coming.”

Ms. Fang Wang went on to thank everybody who supported the project, including the State Department of Commerce, the Upstate Alliance, their design team, and Marvin Moss of the Laurens County Development Corporation.

On hand to welcome the new plant was Jennifer Noel, Director of Global Visions Development for the South Carolina Department of Commerce, who welcomed Uniscite to Laurens County and South Carolina on behalf of  Governor Haley and Commerce Director Hitt.

“…and really what another wonderful milestone for your company, that you’re going to break ground for your first facility out ofChina. And, really, what a wonderful location you’ve picked here in Laurens County and South Carolina. We couldn’t be happier. And that’s a $70 million investment here in Laurens County and 100 jobs. And that is incredible.”

Laurens County Economic Development Director Marvin Moss told WLBG that grading for the new plant will begin this week, with completion expected within 9 to 12 months. The building is expected to eventually cover some 300,000 square feet.

Hal Johnson, President and CEO of the Upstate South Carolina Alliance

welcomed the Chinese investors and managers for the new plant in Chinese.

He then congratulated Uniscite’s selection of this site in the Upstate, saying the project fits perfectly if you think about the strengths of the regions in advanced materials for both domestic supply and export:

“We’re very pleased to have this highly advanced facility in process. Thank you, Uniscite. (Chinese) that means, may Uniscite be profitable and successful.”
