Laurens City Police were dispatched to an apartment on East Main yesterday morning where a woman reported she had been assaulted by her live-in boyfriend. On arrival, the woman told officers that around 12:30 in the morning she and the boyfriend got into an argument about a friend calling. After arguing for a while, the boyfriend reportedly began pushing her around, so she called the police. On arrival, the officers determined there was not enough evidence for an arrest. Sometime after the police left, the boyfriend reportedly began yelling at her again, then allegedly started hitting her with an open hand, causing her to fall down and scrape her left arm on the door frame. Visible injuries were photographed. The boyfriend said the woman’s account of events was untrue, claiming she suffers from memory loss and does not know what she’s talking about. When asked about the visible injuries on the woman, the boyfriend reportedly said she falls down a lot. Based on analysis of the evidence, and a background check indicating the man had a conviction for criminal domestic violence in the past six months, he was arrested. 49-year-old Arthur Leroy “Roy” Compton of Apartment 19 at 255 East Main Street, Laurens was placed in the Johnson Detention Center, where he was being held for a warrant to be obtained to charge him with 2nd Offense Criminal Domestic Violence.
