Eleven high school sophomores from Laurens County have been named finalists for the Cecil O. Davenport Citizenship Award. The one selected as this year’s recipient will be announced Thursday night at the Annual Banquet of the Chamber of Commerce.
Since its inception the annual award recognizes outstanding tenth grade students in Laurens County who exemplify good citizenship.
This year’s finalists…
James Templeton Addison IV ofClintonHigh school is the son of Laurie and James Templeton ofClinton. A member of the Golf team, Jay has played on the junior varsity Football Team, and the Bass Fishing Team. He is a member of the Beta Club and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. An active member of the First Presbyterian Church Clinton Youth Group, Jay has been involved with Vacation Bible School as well as C.A.M.P. Volunteer (Christ as my Pal camp – Buddy). When not involved with school activities and volunteer projects, Jay enjoys fishing, hunting, and working with beef cows.
Ashley Elizabeth Brown of Laurens District 55 High School is the daughter of Tami Brown of Laurens. She is a member of the varsity Golf Team as well as the LDHS Dance Team. She will be inducted into the National Honor Society during the spring semester. Ashley also serves on the Student Council as a School Improvement Member and she is a representative on the Homecoming Committee and Custodial Appreciation Committee. She is an active member of First Presbyterian Church Laurens and participates in the youth group in volunteering at the Memorial Home and the Soup Kitchen. Ashley also volunteers with the Chris Brown Straight Street Golf Tournament.
Blaine Joshua Darling of Laurens District 55 High School is the son of Jennifer and Abe Darling of Laurens. He participates on The Student Council and is a member of the Chorus. Blaine is an active member of Chestnut Ridge Baptist Church participating in their youth group and plays lead guitar in the Youth Praise Band. He has volunteered in the Laurens Hope Foundation as well as the Thanksgiving Blessing of a Meal. He enjoys playing the guitar, singing, and engine building.
Hannah Joy Davidson is Home Schooled and is the daughter of Karen and James Davidson. She is a South Carolina Junior Scholar, Duke TIP participant and a member of the Eta Sigma Alpha National Honor Society. Hannah is an active participate in the Westminster Presbyterian Church Youth Group. She also participates in the church Chamber Orchestra and Handbell Choir. She is a member of the Laurens YMCA Swim Team and volunteers for Carpenters for Christ and 1 John 3 Ministries. Hannah enjoys playing the violin, gardening, crafts and swimming.
Sydney Shepard Halbert of Laurens Academy is the daughter of Dawn and Darryl Halbert. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Beta Club, Yearbook Staff, and plays varsity softball and varsity volleyball. Sydney is participating in the Laurens County Junior Leadership 2012 program. She volunteers as a Sunday School teacher of K-5 and First grade children at her church. She also volunteers for Field of Dreams Softball games for handicapped children. Sydney enjoys photography, art, scrapbooking, and animal rescue.
Abigail Blake Harwell of Clinton High School, the daughter of Dana and the Reverend Blake Harwell. She is a member of the Volleyball team, Lacrosse team, and Math team as well as the Beta Club, Student Council, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Abby is an active member of First Baptist Church Clinton where she participates in the youth choir and church youth activities. Other activities include Girl Scouts, travel club, Volleyball and working with the Clinton Food Bank. She especially enjoys playing the piano, singing, writing poetry, essays, and stories as well as traveling.
Zaria McKenzie Hill of Clinton High School is the daughter of Stacey and James Hill. At CHS she is a member of the Beta Club and JV Cheerleader squad. Aria is active in the CHAMPS program sponsored by Presbyterian College. She volunteers with other CHAMPS students to help Keep Laurens County Clean as well as assisting those who are handicapped by building ramps, painting, or general cleaning of their homes and yards. She is also a South Carolina Rural Letter Carrier Junior Member. Daria participates in the Bethlehem Grove Baptist Church Youth Group. She enjoys dance, reading, and cheering.
Alyssa Leanne Payne of Laurens District 55 High School is the daughter of Milissia and Jayson Payne. She participates in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and plays saxophone in the band and serves as librarian. Alyssa is involved with her church youth group and participates with interpretive movement. She enjoys photography, photo editing, reading, scrapbooking, and music.
Sarah Elizabeth Roberts of Laurens Academy is the daughter of Robin and James Roberts. She is a member of the Beta Club, National Honor Society, yearbook staff, web, President’s Service Award Program, and Laurens County Junior Leadership 2012. Sarah is also a Teacher Cadet and serves on the Student Council. Her volunteer services include Carpenters for Christ, 1 John 3 Ministries, and Mission trips to Cherokee, NC. She is on the Swim Teach and church Youth Group. Her hobbies are playing the piano, swimming, and crafts.
Johnathan Grant Shiflet ofClintonHigh School is the son of Lisa Chapman and Johnathan Shiflet. At CHS his is on the football team, member of the Beta Club, Science Olympiad, and the Fishing Club. Johnathan is a member of the First Baptist Clinton Youth Group, participates in the Youth Choir, and the Baptist Young Men’s group. In the community he is a member of Boy Scout Troop 174. Johnathan enjoys hunting, fishing, camping, spending time with friends, and participating in mission projects.
Hope Elaina Spencer of Laurens District 55 High School is the daughter of Noel and Ron Spencer. She is a member of the Beta Club, Raider Squad – a leadership and community service club, runs Track and Field, and Health Science groups. Hope has volunteered to help with Elementary School Festivals, and The Haunted Jail. She enjoys reading, singing, and spending time with friends and family.
Zaccheus Kenyatta Delshun Young of Clinton High School is the son of Andre Zacekeus Young. He participates on the Football, Basketball, and Baseball teams. He is involved with his youth group at his church. D. Y. enjoys participating in sports and enjoys drawing.
Finalists for the Cecil O. Davenport Citizenship award are nominated by high school teachers, guidance counselors and leaders based on qualifications including hard work, good study habits, and possessing strong character.
The winner will be announced tomorrow night at the Annual Banquet of the Laurens County Chamber of Commerce.
