The issue of a proposed modified dress code for Sanders and Laurens Middle Schools was an issue that divided the board at last night’s Laurens District 55 school board meeting. The proposal to have a uniform dress code for the two schools was introduced at last months meeting by Dr. Rhett Harris, principal of Laurens Middle School. An additional parent meeting has been held since then, and it was announced that surveys are currently being distributed to parents for assess the level of support for the code.
Last night, a motion was made by board member Jim Lollis to institute the uniform dress code for Sanders and Laurens Middle Schools, but the motion did not carry due to a tie vote. Trustee Barbara Beeks was absent so unavailable to break the tie.
A major objection by those in opposition was that it was wrong to only implement the code to select middle schools, instead of all the middle schools in the district. The final board decision was to hold off on the measure until there is more feedback from parents and schools that were not originally considered in the original plan.
