College Notes:

  • South Carolina 6 – Liberty 4…. South Carolina punched their ticket to the super regional this coming weekend as they defeated the Liberty Flames 6-4… If you will remember, the teams started the game on Sunday night and were ready to start the bottom of the 5th inning when bad weather forced the suspension of the game with the Gamecocks leading 4-2… The Gamecocks came right out and added 2 more runs in the bottom of the 5th playing small ball and then held on as Liberty made it interesting scoring a run in the 8th and another in the 9th and had runners in scoring position before the Cocks silenced the threat… South Carolina tallied nine hits in the contest, including a 2-for-4 effort from senior LB Dantzler and sophomore Tanner English. Dantzler also drove in a game-high two runs…. The Gamecocks ran their season record to 42-18 and extended their winning streak in NCAA post-season winning streak to 27 games… The Gamecocks will have to travel to Chapel Hill for the super regional as the Tar Heels beat Florida Atlantic 12-11 in 13 innings…If you missed it, it was a whale of a game where 15 runs were scored by the 2 teams after the 9th inning.
  • NCAA Division I Softball… The NCAA division I Softball CWS Finals started the best of 3 series last night as the #1 seeded Oklahoma Sooners takes on the #7 seeded Volunteers of Tennessee… The game was tied 0-0 at the end of regulation and both teams scored 3 in the 11th inning… Oklahoma took the win on a walk-off 2 run homer in the bottom of the 12th inning… Oklahoma leads the series 1-0 and can clinch the championship with a win out in Oklahoma City tonight.

Braves 7 – Pirates 2… The Braves started a 3 game series with the Pittsburg Pirates last night down at the Ted and they started it with a 7-2 win… The Braves played long ball last night as Brian McCann, Jason Heyward and Freddie Freeman each belted a 2-run homer… Kris Medlin picked up the win pitching 7 innings giving up 7 hits, 1 earned run while striking out 7 and walking none… Game 2 of the 3 game series is tonight in Atlanta.

Greenville Drive: The Drive had the last night off and will travel to Charleston tonight to start a 3 game series with the RiverDogs… Charleston leads the South Atlantic League Southern Division with a 33-21 record while Greenville is dead last with a 16-39 record.
