College World Series Notes: Let’s catch up with the college world series going on out in Omaha:

  • Saturday: Mississippi St. 5 – Oregon St. 4… Mississippi State’s Wes Rae hit a two-run double in the eighth and Jonathan Holder was able to close out the ninth as the Bulldogs grabbed a 5-4 victory against Oregon State … Indiana 2 – Louisville 0… Indiana’s Joey DeNato pitched a complete-game shutout, with eight strikeouts and received enough run support to defeat Louisville 2-0 for the Hoosiers’ first win in their first trip to the CWS.
  • Sunday: NC State 8 – North Carolina 1… Carlos Rodon pitched like an ace on Sunday, playing through all nine innings while allowing only one run on five hits with eight strikeouts as NC State crushed their rival UNC 8-1 in Game 3 of the College World Series.  UCLA 2 – LSU 1… in the last game of the opening round of the CWS. UCLA pitchers Adam Plutko and David Berg held LSU to only one run, while teammates backed it up with stifling defense in the Bruins’ 2-1 win.
  • Monday: Oregon State 11 – Louisville 4… In a loser’s bracket game, Oregon State scored 3 runs in the 3rd inning and 7 in the 4th in route to an 11-4 win over Louisville… The Cardinals 4 errors also contributed to their being the first team eliminated from the CWS….  Mississippi State 5 – Indiana 4… Mississippi State scored 3 runs in the top of the 8th inning to take a 5-3 lead over Indiana in the late game last night then held on to take a 5-4 win over Indiana handing the Hoosiers their 1st loss of the CWS.
  • Tuesday Schedule: North Carolina vs. LSU @ 3:00 pm on ESPN in elimination game… UCLA vs. NC State @ 8:00 pm on ESPN in winner’s bracket game. 

Braves 2 – Mets 1….  The Braves had an almost 4 hour rain delay before they finally got the game with the Mets started last night… In the 9th inning, Freddie Freeman had a 2-run walk-off homer as the Braves defeated the Mets 2-1…  They have a doubleheader scheduled with the Mets today with the first game at 1:10 and the nightcap at 7:10.  

Greenville Drive: The Drive finished the first half of the season this past weekend in Savannah as they faced off with the Sand Gnats…

  • Friday: Savannah 2 – Greenville 1 (12)… On Friday the Drive lost 2-1 to the Gnats in 12 innings… After getting the leadoff batter in the bottom of the 12th, the Drive pitcher gave up 2 singles and a walk to load the bases with San Gnats and a sacrifice fly brought home the game winning run.
  • Saturday: Savannah 7 – Greenville 2… Greenville gave up 4 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning and that was all the sand Gnats needed as they went on to a 7-2 win.
  • Sunday: Savannah 8 – Greenville 0… Savannah completed the sweep of Greenville with an 8-0 win… Savannah got 10 hits compared to Grenville’s 5 but got them when they counted scoring 2 runs in the 4th inning, 4 in the 7th and 2 more in the 8th.
  • SAL All-Star Break… The Drive are off until Thursday because of South Atlantic League All-Star game tonight up in Lakewood, NJ… The Drive will be represented by two players on the Southern Division team, including one starter at his position. David Chester gets the nod as the starting designated hitter, while Mookie Betts has been selected as a utility infielder. This is the first all-star selection for both Chester and Betts during their respective professional careers. 

NHL:  Boston 2 – Chicago 0… The Boston Bruins took a 2-0 win over the Chicago Blackhawks in game 3 of the Stanley Cup finals last night to take a 2 games to 1 in the best of 7 series…. Game 4 will be tomorrow night in Boston and the puck is scheduled to drop just after 8:00 pm.

  • Baseball and Soccer Camps at the Clinton YMCA…  Clinton High School Coach Lee Atkinson will be conducting a baseball camp at the Clinton YMCA for boys 6-12 from 9:00 – 11:00 am June 24th – 28th…  Meanwhile CHS Coach Sean Vick will lead a soccer camp June 24th - 28th for youth ages 6-12…   Registration deadline is Friday June 21st  at 5:00 pm for both of these camps so don’t delay… For more information contact the Clinton YMCA at 864-833-1555 or see the posting in the Featured Sports section at wlbg.com.

  • Laurens YMCA Baseball Camp… The Laurens YMCA will be holding a baseball camp for youth ages 7-14 June 25-27.. This camp will be conducted by former LDHS Coach Ed Prescott and will be held at Collyar Park … The deadline to register for is June 23rd… For more information see the posting in the Featured Sports section at wlbg.com or call the Y at 984-2621… There will also be a cosmetology camp June 25-28th… It will be conducted by Leigh Ann Simpson stylist for Miss SC Contestants and at Wimberly West in Laurens… It is open to youth 7-14 and has a maximum capacity of 20 participants… Again call the Y or see the posting at wlbg.com for more information.

 And finally, its only 73 days until the start of high school football season on August 30th when Laurens will travel to BHP and Clinton will go to Gaffney. The night before PC will open their season at Wake Forest.
