Rainfall was heavy at times in areas around Laurens County last night. In addition to rain, leaves, limbs and even trees were down on roadways in some locations. A large tree was reportedly down on Riverfork Road, Waterloo overnight.
Law enforcement agencies have been reminding motorists to take extra care as we travel during this 4th of July Holiday weekend.
In spite of five fatalities in South Carolina last weekend, the tentative numbers for the 1st half of the year as of midnight this past Sunday night show 337 traffic deaths statewide, which is down from 414 at the same time midway through 2012. The five deaths this past weekend included one motorcycle fatality, which occurred here in Laurens County. A Wattsville resident died instantly when his motorcycle ran off Highway 252 just over two miles west of US 76 and hit a ditch, throwing him to his death.
That fatality brings Laurens County’s highway death total for the year to three, which is a big improvement over the 11people killed midway through 2012.
