Real Radio 860 WLBG Sports Report: 7-18-13

Braves:

  • The Braves were off last night and will be again tonight as they finish up the All-Star break… They will start a week long road trip tomorrow night with the first stop being in Chicago as they start a 3 game series with the White Sox.
  • The Braves are in 1st place in the NL East as they get ready to come out of the all-star break… They have a 54-41 record which is 6 games better than the 2nd place Washington Nationals… Philadelphia in 3rd 6.5 back, the Mets are 11 back and the Marlins are in last place 18 back.
  • The Braves are hoping to get Freddie Freeman back for the weekend series and possibly Jason Heyward… BJ Upton is presently on the 15-day disabled list.

Greenville Drive:

  • The Greenville Drive were suppose to start a home stand last but the storms that rolled through the area just after supper caused them to postpone the game… Maybe they and the Ashville Tourist can get going tonight.

NASCAR

  • Morgan Shepherd: A little sentimental note from last week’s NASCAR racing, Morgan Shepherd became the oldest driver at the age of 71 to start a NACAR major event when he raced in the Sprint Cup race in NH… He finished 41st in the 43 car field and only 8 of the other 42 drivers were even born when he started his 1st senior circuit race back in June 1970… He must have had a fast wheel chair – I mean car last week.

This & That:

  • ESPYS :   ESPN had its annual awards show for sports as voted by the fans last night out in LA and a couple of the highlights were: Best Female Athlete: Serena Williams, Best Male Athlete –  LeBron James, Best Team – Miami Heat and Best Play – Jadeveon Clowney for his hit on the Michigan running back during the Outback Bowl Victory last January..  Think they are still looking for that helmet.
