As of July 14, 363 people have died on South Carolina highways, compared to 451 highway deaths in this same time period in 2012. The 363 fatalities include 38 pedestrians, 55 motorcyclists and six bicyclists who were killed on state roads and highways.
Even with recent road fatalities here in Laurens County, our fatality rate remains below last year. We have had 5 highway fatalities in Laurens County through midnight this past Sunday night, compared with 14 at the same time in 2012. Four of our neighboring counties also have improved statistics for this year. Newberry County is down from 6 last year to 1 this year, Greenwood County is down from 5 to 2, Spartanburg is down from 28 to 17 and Anderson County is down from 25 to 14. Greenville, Abbeville and Union counties are now at the same level of fatalities as this time last year. Greenville has 29, Abbeville has 3 and Union County has 1.
Saluda County is up from 3 to 4 this year.
