Laurens City Police were investigating a burglary case yesterday, looking for firearms that had been stolen; but during their search they reportedly found, instead, several packages of marijuana. Detective Jared Hunnicutt and Lt. Donald Evans were on Jackson Street investigating reports that stolen firearms could be in the possession of a man from that residence. Getting consent from the owner, they began to search a shed outside the house. Lt. Evans opened a large refrigerator that appeared a likely place to hide guns, but instead of finding any firearm he reportedly encountered a plastic bag filled with a green leafy substance that appeared to be marijuana. Officer noted a strong smell of marijuana came from the refrigerator when it was opened. Detective Hunnicutt was searching a large cabinet and he reportedly located marijuana inside a Solo cup, and a gallon-sized plastic ziplock bag also containing marijuana. As officers continued their search they reported also finding a small clear plastic 3-drawer cabinet that had several plastic bags of marijuana throughout all the drawers. At this time the subject arrived. He reportedly admitted the marijuana was his, and showed offers more marijuana inside a pistol box in his room. Questioned about the stolen firearms, he told of having purchased guns “on the street” and showed police a 12-gauge pistol-grip shotgun and a 25 caliber semi-automatic handgun. A check on the firearms indicated they were not the weapons police were looking for. They reportedly seized the shotgun and 5 shells and the handgun, due to the alleged marijuana, but did not charge the man with a firearms violation. They also seized 7.59 ounces of marijuana in 9 different containers.
They arrested 26-year-old Brandon Reshod Powers of 104 Jackson Street, Laurens, who is also known as “Shod.” Mr. Powers was placed in the Johnson Detention Center, where he was being held for warrants. Officers reportedly intend to charge him with Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Distribute.
