Sports Report for Tuesday, 9-24-2013

Local sports:

CHS:

  • Girls Tennis…  We need to do a catching up with CHS girls’ tennis… Last Thursday the Lady Devils defeated the Lady Centurions of Broome by a score of 7-0… Mason Paige Gambrell, Gracie Waldron, Sela Vaughn, Sommer Lawton and Allison Oxner all took wins in singles action…. In doubles action, Waldron and Gambrell teamed up to take a win as did Elizabeth Jones and Rachel Lloyd… The Lady Devils are in action today at home against the Lady Cyclones of Chester. 

LDHS:

  • Girls Tennis…   I also need to do some catching up with Lady Raider tennis… Last Thursday the Lady Raiders faced the Lady Patriots of JL Mann and fell 5-1 … There was good news in the match in that Laurens’ #1 singles player Sara Kalyn Coker took the first ever singles win against Mann… The entire team had its strongest showing against perennial powerhouse Mann in that   each player won at least 1 game… For complete match details and comments from Coach Corley, click on the following link:     Lady Raider Tennis Results
  • Volleyball… Also last Thursday night the Lady Raider Volleyball team fell to the Lady Rams of Westside 4-1… The Rams took the first two sets by scores of 25-17 and 25-19… The Lady Raiders rallied winning the third set 25-17 but Westside took the fourth and deciding set by a score of 25-17… Anna Stevenson had 5 kills and 5 blocks for the Raiders… The team travels to Easley tonight. 

Braves:

  • Brewers 5 – Braves 0… The Braves and the Brewers faced off in the first game of a 3-game series in Atlanta last night and the Braves managed only 3 hits while the Brewers pounded out 11 three of which were homers as they took a 5-0 win over the Braves… Game 2 of the series is tonight at The Ted with first pitch scheduled for 7:10 pm. 

College Notes:

  • AP Football Poll…. The latest AP football poll came out late Sunday and there is no change in the top 10 from last week… The top 5 are Alabama, Oregon, Clemson, Ohio State and Stanford… Spots 6-10 are held by LSU, Louisville, Florida State, Georgia and Texas A&M… South Carolina continues to hold the #12 spot.

Broadcast Reminders:

  • Middle School Football… we will have our first broadcast of middle school football this Wednesday (9-25-13) as we bring you all the action from Laurens Middle School where the Tigers will be taking on the Bell Street White Wildcats… Kickoff is slated for 5:00 pm so we’ll go live about 5 minutes before that… As normal, we stream all local sports online at wlbg.com.
  • WPCC: Be sure to join Buddy, Jimmy, Jason and BJ at 6:45 Friday as they get you ready for all the action from Abbeville as the Red Devils will be taking on the Abbeville Panthers … Also, don’t forget to join them Saturday morning at 8:00 for the Saturday Morning Rewind Show live from Whitefords of Clinton… They will review all the local high school action from the night before and have one the CHS Red Devil coaches on hand to discuss Friday night’s game… They will also talk about college action on Saturday… Then stay tuned at 9:00 am for an encore presentation of the Clinton at Abbeville game.
  • WLBG: Be sure to join Coach Greg Lawson and Mike Hughes at the House of Pizza Tuesday night for the Coach Greg Lawson Show… The show will start at 7:30 and run until about 8:30… Join them as they talk about the last week’s game and the upcoming game as well as other topics.… The House of Pizza will have a couple of specials and one of them is 55₵ wings.… Remember that we do stream all local sporting events live on the internet at WLBG.com.
  • Internet rebroadcast of Laurens game…  WLBG will also rebroadcast this Friday night’s game on Saturday morning at 7:00 am and again Sunday at 2:00 pm on the internet only… It will not be rebroadcast at 860 am on your radio… You must go to www.wlbg.com and click on the “Listen Live” link just under the top of page banner on the right side.. 

This & That:

  • Carolina Mascot Challenge… Once again this year both the CHS Red Devil mascot and the LDHS’s Sir Victor the Raider are participating in the Carolina Mascot Challenge promoted by television station CW62 in the Spartanburg area… The mascot finishing first in fan voting will earn up to a $1500 check for their school.. You can vote for your favorite mascot once a day from different devices (IP addresses)… If you want to vote, you need to hurry because first round voting ends this Sunday night for the preliminary round… Click on the following link to go to the stations site where you will find all the contest rules as well as your opportunity to vote:   Link to Voting Site for Mascot Challenge Contest    Your school can’t win if you don’t vote.  

Clinton YMCA:
