A Joanna man was killed Thursday night when the moped he was riding crashed with a 2003 Ford Explorer. According to the Highway Patrol, the wreck occurred at 8:23 Thursday night on US 76 near Bethlehem Grove Church Road. The moped rider was transported to Laurens County Memorial Hospital by EMS.
Laurens County Chief Deputy Coroner Vickie Cheek identified the deceased as 52-year-old John David Whitney of 107 South Ellis Street, Joanna. The Greenville News reported that Mrs. Cheek said Whitney died at the hospital at 9:25 pm of head and chest injuries. Highway Patrol Corporal Bill Rhyne said the moped operator was not wearing a helmet at the time of the fatal crash.
A 24-year-old Clinton woman was the driver of the 2003 Ford Explorer involved in the wreck. She and an infant passenger, who was confined in a child safety seat, were uninjured, according to the Highway Patrol.
Corporal Phil Rhyne said that the fatal accident remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol and its MAIT team.
