Big crowds were out again Friday night and Saturday for the 2013 ‘Squealin’ on the Square’ this weekend in Laurens. Among the teams participating, over 25 were in the official Kansas City BBQ Society competition.
Killer B’s BBQ of Evans, Georgia was named the Grand Champion of the 13th Annual ‘Squealin’ on the Square.’ The team is composed of Jim and Jan Burg. They’re up from 22 competitions their first year to 36 here in their third year. As Grand Champion, Killer B’s BBQ won the big trophy, plus $1,500, an invitation to the American Royale in Kansas City and an opportunity to represent South Carolina in the Jack Daniels Invitational. They’ve had the chance to go to Kansas City before, but chose to return to the ‘Squealin’ Event in Laurens instead.
Getting the Reserve Grand Champion Trophy for 2013, along with a $1,000 Grand Prize, was the Tenacious Q team from Lawrenceville, Georgia.
Midnight Burn of Hendersonville, NC came in 3rd, County Line Q of Greer was 4th and Blue Sky BBQ of Dawsonvile, GA was 5th overall.
Winning the Chicken Category was Berry Patch BBQ of Newberry. County Line Que of Greer took 1st Place in Ribs. Killer B’s BBQ of Evans, GA was 1st in Pork and in the Brisket Category.
A local team won the ‘Anything Butt’ category this past weekend. REC BBQ of Waterloo won the $150 prize for their BBQ Shrimp Dish.
Also during the Saturday evenings, Mary Lawson won the Laurens Rotary Club’s Duck Race and $300. John Field’s duck came in 2nd for $150, while Cal Benson claimed the $100 prize for his duck placing in last place.
