Laurens County Council this week gave 2nd reading approval to changes in the One Mill tax for Higher Education. This one mill has for years has been approved for operations at the Laurens County Higher Education Center, with 90% going to Piedmont Tech and 10% to USC-Union at Laurens operations. Earlier this year, on hearing that USC was moving out of the Higher Education Center, council voted for Piedmont Tech to get 100% of the Higher Education mill once USC left the Higher Education Center. Now, with confirmation USC is just moving to new facilities in Laurens, Council is moving to resume the 90% – 10% split between Tech and USC; but delete reference to maintenance of the Higher Education Center. It’s now for each schools operations here in the county. 2nd Reading this past Tuesday evening was a 5 to 2 vote, with Council Members Joe Wood and Ted Nash voting no. A 3rd reading is still required.
