Veterans Day Observances

Local VFW members will be placing flags on the graves of veterans at Forest Lawn Cemetary this afternoon. Laurens Post 3354 Commander Wayne Kinard invites anyone who wants to assist to meet at the flag pole at 4 this afternoon at Forest Lawn on East Main in Laurens.

All local veterans groups are inviting the public to join them Monday at 11 am for the Laurens County Veteran’s Day Program at the Little River Amphitheater in Laurens. Police Chief Sonny Ledda of Laurens Police will be the speaker for the event.

A Veterans Day Celebration in Ware Shoals Monday morning includes naming the School District 51 baseball field in honor of local native Lou Brissie, who played baseball in the textile league and with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1941 before eventually fighting in WWII. Brissie was seriously injured during an artillery barrage while fighting in Italy in 1944. More details on his legacy is available below in today’s Sports Report here on WLBG.com.

The National Forest Service has announced a Free Fee weekend this coming Saturday through Monday, in honor of Veteran’s Day.  The Francis Marion and Sumter National Forests are offering the free-fee weekend November 9, 10 and 11, waiving fees at all-day-use sites in all four districts; and overnight camping fees at campgrounds on the Enoree and Long Cane Ranger Districts.

On the Sumter National Forest day-use fees will be waived at the Fell, Lick Fork and Parsons Mountain recreation areas; at the Cedar Springs and Parsons Mountain OHV trails on the long Cane Ranger District; and at Buncombe Horse Trail and Enoree HOV Trail on the Enoree Ranger District.

Forest Supervisor Rick Lint said “The fall season offers prime opportunities for family fun as well as the promise of spectacular forest foliage.”

The Francis Marion and Sumter National Forests offer a variety of nature-based recreational opportunities across the state, from hiking in the high country to mountain biking the midlands to kayaking the coastal swamps.
