Welcome this is your Real Radio 860 WLBG sports for Monday and it’s brought to you by The City of Laurens has announced that registration for the 6th annual Laurens Idol and Jr. Idol are now taking place at the city hall… Jr, Idol is for boys & girls 8-15… Open auditions are April 25th & 28th and you must register before then… Contact Jason Pridgen at 864-681-7275 for more information.

CHS:

  • Baseball: Woodruff 9 – Clinton 3… The Red Devil baseball team traveled to Woodruff last Friday and the Wolverines scored 4 in the 1st inning and 5 in the 6th to take a 9-3 win… Austin Wooten got the start for Clinton and struggled giving up the 4 earned runs on 1 hit, 5 walks and a couple of hit batters… Bradley Templeton came in and pitched strong until the 6th inning when Woodruff touched him for 5 runs and Landon Allison finished the inning… Clinton got runs in the top of the 6th inning… Colby Templeton doubled and 2 batters later came home when Bradley Templeton singled and advanced to 2nd on an error by the catcher… He then scored when Hunter Stewart doubled… Clinton’s last run came in the top of the 7th inning when Matt Craven and Brandon Pitts both singled… Landon Allison then walked to load the bases… Craven scored then scored when Dalton Foster reached on a fielder’s choice during which B. Pitts was put out at 3rd… The Wolverines were then able to retire the next 2 Red Devils to end the game….   • Soccer: Woodruff 6 – Clinton 2…. The CHS soccer team also traveled to Woodruff last Friday night and they also came up a little short as Woodruff took a 6-2 win… Madison Simpson was again the leading scorer for the Red Devils as he had both goals… Woodruff outshot Clinton 12-10 and Seth Anderson was the only Clinton goal keeper to have saves in goal with 4… Clinton is now 4-11 on the season and 1-5 in region play.

  • Softball: JL Mann 15 – Laurens 3… Last Friday the Lady Raiders traveled to JL Mann to take on the Lady Patriots and an 11 run 4th inning for the Patriots proved to be too much for the Raiders as Mann took a 15-3 win in region action… Mann struck first putting 4 runs on the board in the 2nd inning… The Raiders picked up their 3 runs in the top of the 4th inning… Elizabeth Carman led off with a single then Maria Williamson and Michaela [Read more...]

Welcome this is your Real Radio 860 WLBG sports for Friday and it’s brought to you by Presbyterian College Athletics… Well I mentioned to you on Tuesday that the PC baseball team was taking on Clemson last Wednesday and they always play the “big boys” tough… That was again the case at Clemson as PC fell 5-4 to the #17 ranked Tigers in the bottom of the 9th… The Blue Hose will be on the road this weekend as they start a weekend series at UNC-Ashville today at 3:00..   • Tennis: Clinton 7 – Broome 0… Back on Wednesday the CHS tennis team traveled to Broome and picked up a 7-0 win in region completion… Austin MacMillan, Alec Powell, Jay Pea, Isaac MacMillan and Robert Powell all had wins in singles action… A. MacMillan and A. Powell teamed up to take a win in doubles action as did Jacob Tiller and Joe Scarborough… For more complete match details, click on the following:  2013-4-10__CHS-7_Broome-0  The teams record is 7-2 overall and 4-0 in region play.
  • JV Baseball: Clinton 10 – Chester 7… Also on Wednesday the Clinton JV baseball team traveled to Chester and took a 10-7 win over the Cyclones… Jeremy Simmons was the winning pitcher.  The Red Devils leading hitters were: Braeden Webb 2-4, Brayden Gibbs 1-2 and Jeremy Simmons 1-1.  Coach Mike Turner commented “We were very sloppy defensively, but found a way to win late in the game.  We were down 7-5 going into top of 6th and scored 5 runs in the inning to pull-out the win.”  The JV record is now 9-2.
  • Softball: Chester 9 – Clinton 8… Back on Tuesday the softball team traveled to Chester and Chester took a 9-8 win… Clinton was in the game all the way to the end and Chester won it on a single and a bang-bang play at the plate… According to Coach Nickie Templeton, Jessica Wood pitched well [Read more...]

  • Soccer: Clinton 6 – Chester 1… On Tuesday the CHS soccer team hosted Chester and good news as the Red Devils took a 6-1 win in region action… Madison Simpson had 3 goals for Clinton and Rodolfo Orozco had 2… Dexter Simmons also had a goal for the Red Devils… Clinton outshot Chester 31-9 and Seth Anderson had 6 saves in goal.
  • Soccer: Clinton 4 – Middle College 3… Yesterday the Red Devil soccer team picked up its 2nd win in a row as they defeated Greer Middle College 4-3… Madison Simpson again led the Red Devil offense with 2 goals and Dexter Simmons had 1… Clinton’s winning goal actually came courtesy of GMC as they caused the ball to go into their goal… GMC outshot Clinton 15-11 and Seth Anderson and Jose Gayton combined to stop 6 GMC shots… Clinton’s record is now 4-10

CHS:

  • Baseball: Chester 16 – Clinton 0… Clinton hosted Chester in region 3-AAA baseball action last night and the score was 4-0 Chester going into the top of the 7th inning… Unfortunately Clinton suffered through one of those innings that happens every now and then as Chester put 12 runs on the board in the 7th to take a 16-0 win… Colby Templeton had 2 of the Red Devils 4 hits with Brandon Pitts and Dalton Foster getting 1 each.
  • JV Baseball: Clinton 11 – Chester 0… Better news for the JV team as they defeated Chester 11-0 in 5 innings… Tristan Smaltz was the winning pitcher (2-hit shutout, 5 K’s).  Leading hitters: Tyler Kelly, Chandler Todd, Brayden Gibbs, and Braeden Webb who were all 2-3.  Coach Mike Turner commented “The guys played very well tonight and it was great to get everyone a chance to play as well.”…  Record: 8-2
  • Golf Monday (4-8)… Catching up with Red Devils golf, on Monday Clinton traveled to Chester for a 3 way match that included Chapman… Chapman won the match shooting a 159 while Clinton finished 2nd with a 169 and Chapman 3rd with a190… Hunter Nichols tied with a player from both the other schools to have the lowest score of 38… Other scores for the Red Devils are: Zach Davis & Harrison Fisher – 43, Nate Moody – 45 and both Michael Mann and Riley Harkins had a 49… The Red Devils are now 9-4 on the season.

The Family YMCA of Greater Laurens, Laurens Dixie Youth Baseball and Smith Chevrolet are proud to be hosting a youth baseball instructional clinic.  The clinic is for boys and girls ages 6-14.  Collegiate and Professional baseball players and coaches from Ripken Baseball Academy will be on hand to personally teach your children the skills and fundamentals to succeed.  The child does not need to play in a league to participate. Softball players are welcome to attend; the drills are great for both sports!!

The Clinic will be presented on Wednesday April 17, 2013 at the YMCA/Dixie Youth Collyar Park Baseball Complex.  Check-In will be from 4:30-5:30pm.  The clinic will be from 5:30-8:30pm.  A snack will be provided to all participants at 8:30pm.

Participants will need to wear their team uniforms or practice apparel and bring their own glove, water bottle and bat if available.  Cleats or tennis shoes are acceptable.

Welcome this is your Real Radio 860 WLBG sports for Tuesday and it’s brought to you by Presbyterian College Athletics… The PC baseball team had a rough weekend as they dropped 3 games to Campbell at home…  Campbell is a tough team that has only lost 5 games all year… PC will be on the road tomorrow as they travel to Clemson to take on the Tigers in a 6:30pm game… PC always seems to play the “big boys” tough and I expect the same tomorrow.

  • Softball: Chester 8 – Clinton 5… The Lady Red Devils hosted the Lady Cyclones of Chester in region softball action last night… Errors and missed opportunities proved to be the Red Devils undoing as Chester took and 8-5 win… Chester scored 1 run in the 1st inning and 3 in the 3rd inning to take a 4-0 lead… all 4 runs were unearned… Clinton had runners on 1st & 2nd base in the 3rd inning with no outs but could not score… Clinton did put 3 runs on the board in the 4th inning… Cassie Nichols led off with a walk, Jessica Wood singled and Kylie Griffin walked to load the bases… After the next batter struck out, Tori Merrill doubled clearing the bases… Clinton managed to reload the bases with 2 outs but could not get the key hit… Chester got one of those runs back in the 5th inning to make it 5-3 Chester… Clinton got that run back in their half of the 5th inning when J. Wood again singled and was later driven in by Kayleigh Pitts drawing a walk with the bases loaded walk with 2 outs… Unfortunately, Clinton could get no more and left 3 runners stranded… Chester added another run in the 6th to make it 6-4… Clinton picked up their last run in the bottom of the 6th when Allison Oxner led the inning off walking and later scoring on a Chester error… The Lady Cyclones got 2 insurance runs in the top of the 7th and Clinton left a base runner stranded in their half of the 7th… Jessica Wood and Tori Merrill both went 2-3 the lead the Red Devil offense… Jessica Wood took the loss but pitched well enough to win… Only 4 of Chester’s 8 runs were earned and she gave up 11 hits but struck out 6 while walking none… Click on the following for game stats: 2013-4-8_CHSB-5_Chester-8       
  • JV Baseball: Clinton 7 – Emerald 1… Also last night, the Clinton JV baseball team traveled to Greenwood and defeated Emerald 7-1.  Davis Cunningham threw 6 solid shutout innings for the win.  Brayden Gibbs pitched the 7th to finish the game…  Leading hitter was Chandler Todd 2-4.  Austin Foster, MyKing Price and Delshun Young also added singles…   Coach Michael Turner stated “The guys played solid defense and we did a good job of putting the ball in play tonight and good things happened for us as a result…. Welcome this is your Real Radio 860 WLBG sports for Monday and it’s brought to you by the City of Laurens…This coming Saturday the City of Laurens is having a Cornhole Tournament and Music Celebration….All Proceeds benefit the Relay for Life Campaign in Honor of Bootsie Cox… The Cornhole Tournament begins at 11am and there is a $20 entry fee if you pre-register or $25 day of event… All ages welcome for the Cornhole tournament… Hot Dogs and Hamburgers will be available for sale…Music will begin at 5pm and is free to the public….All tournament participants can pre-register at the Laurens Mill Street and Main Street Fire stations… For more information please email LaurensPRD@yahoo.com or Bhughes@cityoflaurenssc.com.

  • Soccer: Nike Palmetto Cup in Cayce … Clinton played 2 games last Friday in the Nike Palmetto Cup in Cayce…
    • Fort Mill 8 – Clinton 0… In the first game, a strong Fort Mill team took an 8-0 win over Clinton… Fort Mill had 19 shots on goal while there defense held Clinton to none… Jose Gayton managed to make 9 saves in goal.
    • Clinton 6 – Westwood 3… Better news in their second match of the day as the Clinton took a 6-3 win over Westwood… Madison Simpson led the Red Devils offense scoring 3 goals… Nolan Boozer added 2 and Joseph Rodriguez had 1… Westwood outshot Clinton 16-14 but Jose Gayton was able to save 9 of Westwood’s shots in goal… The Red Devils are now 2-10 on the season.

LDHS:

Welcome this is your Real Radio 860 WLBG sports for Friday and it’s brought to you by Presbyterian College Athletics…. Last Tuesday the PC baseball team hosted the USC Upstate Spartans and PC had a 7-5 lead going into the 8th inning but the Spartans put 8 runs on the board in the 8th to take a 13-7 win… PC will host Campbell in a 3 game weekend series starting today at 3:00… The Camels are one of the better teams in the Big South sporting a 25-5 / 6-3 record while the Blue Hose are 18-12 / 5-1… Should be an interesting series.

Local sports: Most all local sports were cancelled yesterday due to the weather

CHS:

  • Winter Sports Awards: last week CHS had its Winter Sports Award Ceremony… In boys’ basketball, Kenyon Brown was named the MVP and for the girls basketball it was Gabby Bates…. There were other awards handed out and to see those click on the following: Winter Sports Ceremony
  • Soccer: Weather permitting, the boys’ soccer team is scheduled to be in action today at Brookland-Cayce H.S. in the Nike Palmetto Cup… They are scheduled to take on Fort Mill this morning at 10:00 and Westwood at 5:00 this afternoon.

LDHS:

  • Softball: The Lady Raider softball team is scheduled to be in action in the Aiken Triple Crown Tournament today & tomorrow in Aiken, SC… Their 1st opponent is Spring Valley this afternoon at 5:00 and then Midland Valley tonight at 8:30… They then will return to action tomorrow morning at 10:45 against Daniel H.S… There will be more games after that tomorrow against opponents and at times to be announced.

Clinton & Laurens Baseball Games Cancelled

Due to the bad weather, the Laurens and Clinton baseball games scheduled for today (4-4-13) in their respective spring break tournaments have been cancelled. At this time WLBG does not know of any plans to reschedule these games.

Clinton will be back in action next Tuesday when they host Chester in an important region contest.

Laurens will be back in action also next Tuesday when travel to TL Hanna also a region contest for the Raiders.

  • Baseball: Clinton 11 – Westside 3 … The Clinton Red Devils got back on the winning path last night as they took an 11-3 win over the Rams of Westside in the Carolina Classic Spring Break tournament over in Pendleton… Clinton got on the board first putting 4 runs on the board in the bottom of the 2nd inning… Dalton Foster & Hunter steward started the inning off with singles followed by Bradley Templeton drawing a walk to load the bases… When Trey Childress also drew a walk it scored D. Foster… Josh Simmons then flied out but deep enough to score Stewart… Justin Foster then singled and Templeton came home… Austin Wooten then singled scoring Childress… Westside picked up their runs in the top of the 3rd making it 4-3… Clinton added 2 runs in the 4th … Singles by J. Foster, Landon Allison and a walk to M. Craven set the stage for D. Foster to drive in 2 runs on a double… The Red Devils added 4 more runs in the 5th inning… Clinton received 4 walks in the inning and key hits by Colby Templeton, B. Pitts and L. Allison led to the runs… Clinton picked up its final run in the 6th inning… B. Pitts walked, Charles McKinney doubled and then L.   • Soccer: Brookland-Cayce 9 – Clinton 1… The Red Devil soccer team started play in the Nike Palmetto Cup hosted by Brookland-Cayce H.S.  Their opening round opponent was the host school Brookland –Cayce Bearcats… The Bearcats entered the match with a single loss and left the match the same way as they defeated Clinton 9-1… Madison Simpson had the lone goal for the Red Devils… The Red Devils are scheduled to be back in action today at 10:00am as they take on Fort Mill at B.C.H.S.
