Local:

  • Last night long time high school sports official Mr. Truman Owens was inducted into National Federation of State High School Associations Hall of Fame.. Mr. Truman as we all call him becomes a member of the Hall of fame that his late brother Mr. Sam Owens was inducted into back in 1999.. It is a tribute well deserved as many officials, coaches and administrators will tell you is well deserved.. Next week I hope to have an interview with Mr. Truman about his induction and career.. My plans are to post it online at wlbg.com.. I’ll have more information about that the middle of next week.. Let’s recap the results from the Laurens County Speedway last Saturday night.

  • Late Model: The Southeastern Late Model Series out of Georgia dropped in at the speedway. .. In the main event, the boys from the Peach State took the top 4 spots with Davis McCoy the winner.. The highest finisher from the Laurens area was Mac Owens who finished 5th.
  • Hobby: Aaron Patterson crossed the finish line 1st but the 2nd place finisher Phillip Watson lodged a protest.. When Patterson refused to tear down his car, he was disqualified and Wilson was awarded the win.. Mart Patterson and Dan Lawson rounded out the top 3.
  • Super Stock 4: Brian Wilson took the win here. Cory Winn finished 2nd and Michael Simmons 3rd.
  • Front Wheel Drive: Jody George was a 1st time winner in this division last Saturday.. Jonathan Surrett and Dustin Sloan were the next 2 across the finish line. [Read more...]

Real Radio 860 WLBG Sports Report: 7-9-10

Braves: The Braves finished the 1st half of the season on the road up In Philadelphia with the Phillies:

  • On Friday the Braves took a 5-0 win over the Phillies.. Atlanta got all 5 of their runs in the 8th inning… The big blow was a grand slam with 2 out by Brian McCann.. Tim Hudson picked up the win pitching 7 innings.
  • On Sat. the Braves won again this time by a score of 6-3.. Brian McCann again had a home run in the 2nd with no one on but again with 2 outs.. McCann finished the day 2 – 4 with 2 RBI’s.. Michael Bourn also went 3-4 scoring twice.. Tommy Hanson picked up the win also going 7 innings.
  • Yesterday the Braves completed the sweep as they took a 4-3 win..  Brian McCann picked up his 3rd homerun in as many days with a solo shot in the 7th inning and again with 2 out.. That homerun also turned out to be the game winner…  Dan Uggla also had a 2-run homer in the game… The Braves will take a 4 day break for the MLB All-Star Game tomorrow night in Kansas City..   Now tonight there will be the Homerun Derby pitting some A.L. stars against some N.L. Braves:

  • The Braves put 4 runs on the board in the 1st inning then went on to take a 7-3 win over the Chicago Cubs in Atlanta last night… The Braves were playing long-ball last night as they had 4 homeruns on the evening.. Local: Looking back at action at the Laurens County Speedway last Saturday night:

  • Hobby Division: Dan Lawson took advantage of problems by other racers to finish 1st in the main event.. Ricky Dale Phillips finished 2nd and Mart Patterson 3rd.
  • Super Late Model: Dino Long never trailed as he picked up his 1st win of the season.. Billy Rushton fought hard but finished 2nd and Frankie Coates 3rd.
  • Limited: David Taylor crossed the finish line first.. Kris Norwood and Brad Rachels were the next 2 to cross behind him.
  • Super Stock 4: Cory Winn won for the 4th time this season.. Michael Simmons and Scott Nelson rounded out the top 3.
  • Front-Wheel Drive: Jonathan Sarratt took his 2nd consecutive win.. Dustin Sloan was 2nd and Casey Lawson 3rd[Read more...]

Local:

  • The season came to an end for the Laurens Little League 12-U All-Star Baseball Team last night as they lost to the Greenwood-Abbeville team up in Spartanburg last night by a score of 8-0.. Laurens kept it close until the top of the 6th inning as they only trailed by a score of 1-0 before the Greenwood Abbeville team broke it open… Congratulations to them on a great effort and my thanks to Stephanie Aylesworth for getting me some of the information on the team.
