Lady Raider Tennis Team Honors Corley But Falls to Mann

10/9/12

Raiders Gain One Against J L Mann on Senior Night

Lady Raider tennis’s only senior, Rebecca Corley, celebrated senior night by pairing with Sara Kalyn Croker to gain the Raiders’ first and only victory in three meetings with JL Mann (6-3, 6-4). The Raider team fell to new region foe JL Mann Tuesday (1-6) after first facing Mann in a play-off loss last year.

“It was great for Rebecca to get this win.  She didn’t play well in her singles [1-6, 0-6 to Caroline Powell], but she found her stroke in doubles.  SK [Croker] really hustled and covered the court well.  Getting a win against Mann is a real boost for us,” LDHS Tennis Coach David Corley said.

Rebecca Corley has played for the Raiders since seventh grade, moving her way up from #2 doubles in her first year as a letterman to #2 singles and #1 doubles this year.  Coach Corley said that Rebecca has been a strong team member, improving every year and going the extra mile to take lessons and play in the off-season.  “This year, especially,” Coach Corley said, “Rebecca played determined tennis – thinking and moving.  She has really played her best tennis this year.”   [Read more...]

Lady Raider Tennis Team Falls to TL Hannah

10/4/12

#2 Doubles Provide Only Close Match in Raider Loss to Hanna

Lady Raiders Tennis’s #2 Doubles, Bailey Rush and Moriah Campbell, came close to providing the Raiders their only win against Region #1 Hanna but fell two points short 4-6, 6-4, 9-11.  The girls held a lead in the tiebreak but allowed Hanna’s Bri Stephens and Abby McGregor to come back to tie the deciding tiebreak at 9-9.  The Raiders then dropped two straight.  “Our girls have played fantastic tennis for the last two weeks.  Bailey has really improved her game, and Moriah found a burst of determination and will after our last loss to Hanna that has really upped her performance,” Raider Coach David Corley said.

The Raiders’ #3 and 4, sisters Brittany and Kathleen Horner, and #5 Ellen Young played strong first sets but fell behind in their second sets.  “There was a moment where we were up in three matches,” Corley said.  “Tonight is our strongest showing against Hanna, so we feel good about our improvement.”    [Read more...]

Lady Raiders Tennis Team Blanked by Easley

10/2/12

Raiders Lose 0-7 to Easley, Look to the Future

Easley took quick wins on almost every court Tuesday night against the Lady Raider tennis team. Kathleen Horner (#3) played the Raiders’ closest match, falling 6-7 (6-8), 2-6.  “Kathleen played a fantastic match – especially having to move up a spot.  Kat is like a backboard; she keeps hitting the ball back, and I think she frustrated the Easley girl [Madison Galloway],” Coach David Corley said.

#1 Sara Kalyn Croker lost to Abby Cook (2-6, 0-6).  #2 Rebecca Corley was sick and missed the night’s match, forcing the other girls to move up a slot.  “We hated to have to move up, but realistically, the experience was good for us.  Bailey [#6 Bailey Rush] got to play singles.  We were able to move Kambrea Gosnell up to #2 doubles, and the other girls got a taste of the next level,” Coach Corley said.  “We needed that taste of next year.”  Rebecca Corley is the only senior on the Raider squad. Greenwood Takes Win Over Laurens in Tennis

9/27/12

Lady Raiders Fall In Reversal Of First Greenwood Match

The LDHS Lady Raider Tennis team battled Greenwood late into the night, only to fall 2-5 in a reversal of the Raiders’ 5-2 victory earlier in the season.

The Raiders picked up wins at numbers three and four, played a match tie breaker at #2 doubles and a set tiebreaker at #1 doubles but fell short of the Eagles.  “We beat them 5-2 earlier this season,” Raider Coach David Corley said.  “The teams are a perfect match, and it took us four match tie breaks to beat them.  It’s hard to pull that off twice.”

#3 Brittany Horner took her first set 6-4, but she lost the second 1-6, forcing the 10-point match tie breaker.  Horner and Abby Burkshorn exchanged points until Horner pulled ahead 11-9 to take the match.  [Read more...]
