Local Sports Results:

CHS:

  • BB: Abbeville 5 – CHS 4… The Red Devil varsity baseball team traveled to Abbeville yesterday to take on the Panthers… The Red Devils trailed 5-2 going into the 7th inning but rallied scoring 2 runs and had the tying run on 3rd but could just not get it home as they fell 5-4 to the Panthers… Peyton Spangler, Matthew Craven and Landon Allison each had 2 hits for the Red Devils… Afterwards Coach Lee Atkinson said “Great job tonight by our pitchers, McKinney and Riddle, we just couldn’t get that key hit in the early innings… I’m proud that we battled in the 7th, scoring 2, unfortunately we left the bases loaded.”..   • JV BB: CHS 12 – Emerald 0… The JV baseball team hosted the Emerald Vikings last night and the Red Devils remain undefeated as they took a 12-0 win in 5 innings… Clinton was led on offense by Charlie Craven who went 2-2 and an RBI, Brayden Gibbs went 2-3 and Dakota Webb had a triple that drove in 3 runs… Tristan Smaltz got the win striking out 7… The Red Devils will be at home today hosting Chester in a JV – Varsity doubleheader at 5:00 & 7:30
  • SB: LDHS 9 – CHS 5… The Laurens Raider softball teams traveled to Clinton last night and in round 2 of the annual rivalry and the Lady Raiders came out on top by a score of 9-5… Clinton led 2-0 after th first inning but Laurens responded with 3 in the second, 4 in the 4th inning and 2 in the 6th… Clinton did not quit as they put 1 on the board in the 5th and 2 in the 7th… Baylee Bragg led the Raider attack going 3-3 with an RBI while Kylee Griffin went 2-2 for the Red Devils with an RBI… Allison Foreback picked up the win for the Raiders while Jessica Wood took the loss for the Red Devils… Click on the following for the box score and more statistics for both teams: 14-3-20_SB_LDHS-Clinton_stats   Click on the following for the scorecard: 14-3-20_SB_LDHS-Clinton_scoresheet
  • Golf: CHS 162 – Chapman 166…  Clinton defeated Chapman Thursday by a score of 162 – 166 at Lakeside CC… Clinton was led by Hunter Nichols with a two under par 34 and a 4 over par 40 from Michael Mann. Zach Davis and Harrison Fisher rounded out the scoring with a 8 over 44. Chapman’s Seth Robertson was the medalist of the match with a three under par 33. Clinton’s record is 2-1.
  • Soccer: Providence 8 – CHS 0… Back on Wed. the CHS soccer team traveled to Lexington to take on the Providence Athletic Club… Unfortunately Providence took an 8-0 win over the Red Devils… Providence had 18 shots on goal while Clinton managed just 4.

 

LDHS:

  • Tennis: Easley 7 – Laurens 0… Yesterday the Raider boys’ tennis team traveled to Easley to take on the always strong Green Wave tennis team… Easley proved they still are a force to be reckoned with in the region as they took a 7-0 win over the Raiders… Click on the following for match details provided by Coach Corley: 3-20-14_Easley

Local Sports Results:

CHS:

  • BB: CHS 9 – Broome 0… The Red Devil baseball tem traveled to Broome last night and used a 5-run third inning to power themselves to a 9-0 win over the Centurions… The Red Devils had just 8 hits in the game but got them at the most opportune times and also used 4 Broome errors to their advantage… Matthew Craven, Hunter Stewart & Peyton Spangler each had 2 hits for the Red Devils… One of Stewart’s hits was a double and he also collected 3 RBIs on the night… Spangler also picks up the win going 6 innings giving up just 3 hits … Click on the following for game stats: 14-3-19_BB_CHS-Broome_Stats   Click on the following for the game scorecard: 14-3-19_BB_CHS-Broome_scorebook     The Red Devils will travel to Abbeville today for a 6:00 pm contest with the Panthers

 

LDHS:

  • BB: Easley 6 – Laurens 2… The Raider varsity baseball team carried had a 2-1 lead going into the top of the 7th inning at Ed Prescott Field last night when the Easley Green Wave struck for 5 runs and went on to take a 6-2 win handing the Raiders their first loss of the season… Two hit batters and an error loaded the bases for Easley’s Brandon Hood who cleared them on the 3rd pitch to him in the 7th inning with a grand slam homerun over the right field fence… Jordan Pancake then followed with a solo shot for Easley and the Raiders just could not come back from that as they went down in order in the bottom of the 7th… The Raiders managed just 3 hits on the night and left 9 men on base as their offense was sub-par for the night… Click on the following for Laurens game stats: 14-3-19_LDHS_BB-Easley_stats   Click on the following for the scorecard: 14-3-19_L-BB–Easley_scorecard    The 5-1 / 2-1 Raiders will travel to TL Hanna on Friday for a 6:00 pm contest.

  • Golf: Hanna 155 – Laurens 173…   Back on Tuesday afternoon the golf team hosted TL Hanna (the region defending champions) at Lakeside CC… Hanna showed they are still strong as they took a 155-173 win over the Raiders….Ryan Wright had the low score for the Raiders a 39… Now the JV team did take a 1 stroke win over their counterparts from Easley by a score of 195-196… For complete match scoring details click on the following: 3-18-14_LDHS Golf host Hanna
  • B-Soc: Woodmont 5 – LDHS 3… Also back on Tuesday the soccer teams traveled to Woodmont and in boys action the Raiders lost 5-3… Isaac Ayala had 2 goals for the Raiders and Irvine Angeles collect the other…

Sports Report for Wednesday, 3-19-2014

LDHS: Believe it or not I do have a result or two from LDHS yesterday plus just a little “catching up” to do

Boys Tennis

  • Westside 5 – LDHS 2… Last Thursday (3-13-14) the Raider tennis team traveled to Anderson to take on the Rams of Westside… The Raiders picked up only 2 individual wins in the match as the Rams prevailed by a score of 5-2… Picking up wins for the Raiders were Thomas Hughes in the #1 spot and Garrett Madden playing in the #4 singles spot… Now for more details on the match provided by Coach Corley,  click on the following: 3-13-14_Westside
  • LDHS 6 – Woodmont 1… The rain held off yesterday afternoon and the courts were dry enough for the Raiders to host the Woodmont Wildcat at Laurens City Park… Good news as the Raiders picked up their first win of the season by defeating Woodmont 5-1… Thomas Hughes, Collin John, John Calvin Hughes, Garrett Madden and Will Aultman all picked up wins in singles action… Again you can click on the following to see Coach Corley’s recap of the match: 3-18-14_Woodmont    That makes the Raiders 1-3 on the young season.

Boys Golf

  • JL Mann 165 – LDHS 175… Catching up with the boys’ golf team from last Thursday, they traveled to Hejaz Shrine Golf Course outside Mauldin and fell to JL Mann 165-175… Ryan Wright was the match medalist with a 37… After the match Coach Jim Iacuone stated “With the exception of Ryan and Patton Croker I thought we didn’t play well.” Fore scoring details, click on the following: 3-13-14_LDHS Golf at JL Mann

Soccer

  • LDHS 5 – Westside 3… Also catching up with boys’ soccer from last Friday, the Raiders hosted the Rams of Westside and the Raiders prevailed by a score of 5-3… Isaac Ayala led the Raiders with 3 goals… Scoring 1 goal each were Irvin Angele and Fernando Florez… Coach Dennis Balanta stated afterward he felt that this was the best game the team played to date and played as a “team”… Click on the following for more of Coach Balanta’s comments: 3-14-14_B-Soc-v-Westside

 

College Notes:

  • BB: Clemson 78 – Georgia State 66… The Clemson Tiger basketball team took a 78-66 win over Georgia State last night in Clemson in opening round action of the NIT…  KJ McDaniels led the team with 30 points and 14 rebounds while blocking 5 shots… The Tigers face the winner of tonight’s contest between Boston University and Illinois…  They will host the winner of that contest on a date and time to be named later.
  • BB: Georgia Southern 14 – Clemson 5… The Georgia Southern eagles took a 14-5 win over the Clemson Tigers down in Statesboro yesterday… Same 2 teams get back together today @ Georgia Southern
  • College Div. I Baseball Rankings:  This week’s D-I baseball rankings according to the USA Today Coaches’ Poll have Florida state (17-2) moving from 2nd to 1st while the Gamecocks 18-1) drop to 2nd after their loss to Ole Miss this past weekend… The rest of the top 5 are Vanderbilt, Oregon State & Virginia… LSU, Oregon, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisville & NC State make the next 5.
  • SEC Women’s Basketball Awards… SC women’s basketball Coach Dawn Staley was the unanimous selection as Coach Of The Year… Freshman Alaina Coates was selected Newcomer Of The Year… Also a unanimous selection to the SEC First Team was South Carolina’s  Tiffany Mitchell… Aleighsa Welch garnered Second Team Honors.

Softball – Over the weekend the Lady Raider varsity softball team participated in the Lexington Invitational just outside Columbia… Here are the results of those games;

  • LDHS 11 – Brooklyn Cayce 6… In the second game on Saturday the Lady Raider bats finally woke up as they pounded out 15 hits in route to an 11-6 win over Brooklyn Cayce… The Lady Raiders fell behind at the end of 2 innings but 3 runs on the board in the 3rd inning and 5 more in the 4th to jump ahead for good….   • Gilbert 16 – LDHS 6… In the third and final game last Saturday, Gilbert took a 16-6 win over Laurens… At the end of 3 innings of play the Lady Raiders found themselves down 13-0 mainly due to a 9-run 2nd inning by Gilbert… The Raiders rallied with a run in the 4th and 5 in the 5th but it proved to be too little to late… Maria Williamson and Bailey Gibbs were the only 2 Raiders with multiple hits in the game as they had 2 each… Williamson had a solo homer in the 4th inning and in the 5th inning Michaela Smith had a 2-run homer… Click on the following for more stats: 14-3-15-Gm-3_SB_LDHS-Gilbert_stats   Click on the following for the game scorecard: 14-3-15-Gm-3_SB_LDHS-Gilbert_score sheet     Laurens is now 4-3 on the season and is scheduled to travel to Easley today (weather permitting) for a JV varsity double header.

 

JV baseball..  The Raider JV baseball team had a couple of games last Saturday and in the first game they tied JL Mann 8-8… In the second game they fell to TL Hanna by a score of 2-0… That means their season record is 2-1-1.

  • NCAA Women’s D-I Basketball Tournament Selection…  Well last night it was the ladies turn as the NCAA selection committee announce the field for the women’s D-I version of March Madness… Connecticut at 34-0 drew a #1 seed in the Lincoln, NE Regional, Notre Dame 32-0 drew the #1 in the regional they will host, Tennessee (27-5) will be the #1 seed in the Louisville, KY Regional and for the first time in school history the 27-4 Lady Gamecocks of South Carolina will be the #1 seed in the Stanford, CA Regional… The will open up play this Sunday in Seattle, Washington as they play cal State Northridge (18-14)… Tipoff is set for 5:30 pm ET and will be televised on ESPN… Click on the following for the complete tournament bracket: 2014 NCAA D-I Womens Basketball Bracket
  • Clemson Starts NIT Play Tonight…  Now Tiger fans don’t forget that they will open play tonight in the NIT as they host Georgia State (25-8) in Littlejohn Coliseum with tipoff scheduled for 9:00 pm… That game can be seen on ESPNU.

Sports Report for Monday, 3-17-2014

CHS:

  • BB: Gilbert 4 – CHS 0 & Gilbert 6 – CHS 2….  The Red Devil baseball team traveled down to Gilbert on Saturday to take on the Indians in a doubleheader and unfortunately the Indians won both games… They eon the 1st game by a score of 4-0 and the 2nd by a score of 6-2… The Red Devils managed only 9 hits total in both games to the Indians 20…  Hunter Stewart had the most hits for the Red Devils with 3… Coach Atkinson stated after the game “Gilbert is a very good baseball team (6-0) They had a big 4 run third inning in game 1 and were able collect a pair of runs  in the 1st, 2nd and 4th… We didn’t play poorly, but we just could get anything started defensively today. We hit several balls on the nose, but they just wouldn’t fall in for us… Our best hitter on the day was Hunter Stewart who went 3 for 3 in game 2… Pitching was pretty good as well.   • BB: LDHS 8 – Hillcrest 4… Last Friday the Raider baseball team hosted the Rams of Hillcrest and the Raiders had to come from behind to take an 8-4 win… Hillcrest touched Raider starting pitcher Cody Smiley for 4 runs in the top of the 1st inning to take a 4-0 lead… The Raiders scored single runs in the 2nd & 3rd inning and then broke on top for good with 3 runs in the 4th while adding insurance runs in the 5th & 6th innings… Smiley settled down after the 1st inning allowing only 1 more hit until Kevin Dean came in relief in the 5th inning… Smiley led the Raider attack going 3-4 with 2 RBIs… The Raiders are now 5-0 on the season and 2-0 in region play… Click on the following for more game stats: 14-3-14_LDHSB-Hillcrest_stats   Click on the following for the game scorecard: 14-3-14_L-BB–Hillcrest_scorecard

Laurens Academy:

  • BB: LA 15 – Wardlaw 0 & LA: 9 – Wardlaw 2…. The Laurens Academy Crusader baseball hosted Wardlaw in a doubleheader last Friday…. In the 1st game the Crusaders cruised to a 15-0 win… The Crusaders got their 15 runs on just 9 hits, 7 walks and 4 Wardlaw errors… Matthew Urick 3 hits in the game and Noah Stribling Got the win pitching 3 of the 4 innings played… In the 2nd game the Crusaders took a 9-2 win… In this game the Crusaders pounded out 13 hits with 5 different Crusaders getting 2 hits each… Matthew Urwick, Hunter Elwood, Ryan Sneed.   • NCAA Men’s D-I Basketball Tournament Selection…  Well it is now officially time for March Madness as the NCAA selection committee announced the field for the D-I basketball championship tournament getting underway tomorrow… Florida is seeded # 1 in the South Regional, Virginia in the East, Wichita State in the Midwest and Arizona in the West… By the way Wichita St. comes in as the only undefeated team with a record of 34-0…  The Wofford Terriers wound up a #15 seed in the Midwest Regional and will travel to Milwaukee on Thursday night to take on #2 seeded Michigan… The only other state team in the tournament is Coastal Carolina who will be a #16 seed and face #1 seed Virginia in Raleigh this coming Friday night… Now if you click on the following link your will see the complete tournament bracket:        And no I am not filling one out to try for that reported billion dollar prize… Emil pays me way too much to do that… LOL.

Sports Report for Friday, 3-14-2014

Local Sports Results:

CHS:

  • Golf: The Red Devil golf team opened up the 2014 season by splitting with Woodruff and Southside Christian at Three Pines Country Club in Woodruff. Clinton lost to Southside Christian by a score of 161-169… Clinton defeated Woodruff 169-188… Hunter Nichols was the medalist for Clinton shooting a 4 over par 40… Harrison Fisher and Zach Davis both shot a 42 and Michael Mann shot a 45… Joe Milner had the only birdie of the day for the Red Devils when he hit his first shot of the day 4 feet on a par 3… Clinton will travel to Newberry to take on Newberry and Mid Carolina on Tuesday.
  • Lacrosse: St Joseph’s 15 – CHS 9
  • SB: LDHS 16 – CHS 6… The Clinton and Laurens softball teams got together over at Laurens for round 1 of their annual 2-game series… Clinton led the game 3-2 at the end of the 2nd inning but Laurens came back to take a 9-2 lead at the end of 4 innings… In the top of the 5th inning the Lady Red Devils put 4 runs on the board to cut the raiders lead down to 9-6… However the Lady Raiders responded with 7 runs in their half of the 5th inning to take a 16-6 win…  The Red Devils managed 4 hits on the night with Allison Oxner, Brittany Templeton, Brittany Wright & Mason Paige-Gambrell each having a hit…  Jessica Wood took the loss for Clinton… For the Lady Raiders, Tara Bond went 4-4 and scored each time she reached base… With 2 hits each were Maria Williamson, Annsley Nelson, Jordan Henderson & Elizabeth Carman… One of Williamson’s was a 3-run homer… Logan Hill got the win for Laurens pitching 4⅓ innings giving up 4 hits while striking out 5 and walking 3… Allison Foreback picked up a save… The Lady Red Devils are now 4-4 on the season while the Lady Raiders improve to 2-0.. JV SB: LDHS 10 – CHS 5

 

LDHS:

  • Tennis: I need to do a little catching up with boys’ tennis at LDHS… The team opened its season this past Monday as they traveled to Woodmont… In that opening match, Woodmont took a 5-2 win… Thomas Hughes had a win at the #1 singles spot and Hughes teamed up with Collin John as the #1 doubles team… The Raiders then faced Greenwood at the Laurens City Parks the next day in their home opener… The Eagles were a strong team and took a 6-1 win… The lone win for the Raiders came from the #1 doubles team of Hughes & John…. Coach David Corley said he was proud of the effort but with little match play under their belt, his team simply couldn’t compete.

 

College Notes:

  • Basketball: SC 71 – Arkansas 69… The Univ. of SC Gamecocks pulled off an upset last night as they defeated Arkansas 71-69 to advance to the Quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament in the Georgia Dome… They now advance to play Tennessee at about 3:30 today…. Clemson 69 – Georgia Tech 65 in OT… Also last, the Clemson Tigers Clemson overcame a nine-point deficit in the second half and survived a second straight overtime game, prevailing 69-65 over Georgia Tech in the second round of the ACC Tournament… They will face Duke tonight at about 9:00 pm
  • Baseball: The Clemson Tigers will be on the road this weekend as they start a 3-game series with Wake Forest up in Winston-Salem at 6:00 pm today… The SC Gamecocks will also have a 3-game series this weekend… They start SEC play as they host Ole Miss tonight @ 7:00, 4:00 tomorrow and 1:30 on Sunday afternoon… These games can be heard on Sport Radio 1410 WPCC.

CHS:

  • Soc: NHS 7 – CHS 6… The Red Devil soccer team hosted the Wildcats of Ninety Six last night at Wilder Stadium…. The Red Devils proved to be too good a host as the Wildcats took a 7-6 win… Madison Simpson had 4 of Clinton’s goals and Rodolfo Orozco had the other 2 Red Devil goals… The Red Devils are now 0-2 on the young season and will play again next Tuesday when they host Providence
  • SB: CHS 15 WHS 4… For the 2nd time in 3 days the Lady Red Devil softball team took on the Lady Wolverines of Whitmire (this time at Whitmire) and for the 2nd time Clinton posted a win over Whitmire this time by a score of 15-4… The Red Devils pounded out 19 hits with Allison Oxner going 5-5, Molly Scarborough 4-4, and Kayleigh Pitts collecting 5 RBIs… Jessica Wood picked the win going 5⅓ innings striking out 6 and allowing 3 of Whimire’s runs… Kayleigh Pitts finished the game for the Red Devils striking out 1 but walking 4… The Red Devils are now 3-2 on the season
  • JV SB: CHS 17 – WHS 9… In the game prior to the varsity softball game, the JV softball team took a 17-9 win over Whitmire… Hunter Benson went 2-3 for the team and Gracie Templeton was 1-2… Kassidy Jennings reach base all 3 of her time at bat and score 3 times… Katie Roland was the winning pitcher striking out 4 and walking 4,,, The JV team is now 2-0 on the season… Both CHS softball teams will travel to Laurens tomorrow to take on the Raiders with the JV game starting at 5 and the varsity game about 7… That game can be heard on sports Radio 1410 WPCC and online at www.wpcconline.com

 

LDHS: I need to do a little catching up on some results at LDHS over the past few days that I have just not been able to get to you so let’s do that now

  • Track: Back on Tuesday night the Raiders hosted Clinton and Union County in their first meet of the season… In boys’ action the Raiders came in 1st with 70.5 points, Clinton 2nd – 63 & Union County 3rd-37.5… The results were not quite as good for the girls as Clinton finished 1st with 59 points just edging out Union County who finished 2nd with 58 points…. The Lady Raiders were 3rd with 49 points…. The track teams will be back in action today as they travel to Woodruff.
  •   Boys Soccer:  Monday night the Raider soccer teams opened their season at Union County… While I don’t have the girls’ results, I can tell you that the boys took a 14-0 win over UC… The Raiders obviously were dominating the entire game and Coach Dennis Balanta was very pleased with their play… Irvin Angeles and Isaac Ayala led the Riders in scoring with 4 goals each… Then on Tuesday night the Raiders had their first home match against a traditionally strong JL Mann Patriots team… Man proved to be just that as they defeated the Raiders 6-0… Coach Balanta stated afterward the team did not play especially well and made too many mistakes on defense…. They will travel to Westside tomorrow.
  • Golf: This past Monday the LDHS Boys’ Golf team participated in the Outback Invitational hosted by South Aiken High School. The tournament was played on the Cobb Curse at Woodside Plantation in Aiken… They finished in 7th place overall…  The Raider scores were Ryan Wright 79, Jonathan Finley 86, Will Franks 94, and Patton Croker 95… Coach Jim Iacuone said afterward “ I was pleased with how we played. It was the first varsity tournament for two of our players and I think we were a little nervous. It was also a course we haven’t played at before. It’s been several years since LDHS participated in this event. It’s a good start to the season.”

  

College Notes:

  • South Carolina 74 – Auburn 56… The Gamecocks defeated Auburn 76-54 in the 1st round of SEC Tournament play… They will now face Arkansas in the 2nd game this afternoon in the Georgia Dome… Most likely in the 3:30 or so time frame.
  • Clemson will face Georgia Tech tonight about 9:00 as the Yellow Jackets defeated Boston College 73-70 in overtime last night to advance and play the Tigers tonight.
  • Clemson 2 – App. State 1… The Tigers defeated the Mountaineers 2-1 in mid-week action at Doug Kingsmore Stadium yesterday.

Local Sports Results:

CHS:

  • Soccer: Saluda 7 – CHS 1… The CHS soccer team opened their season at home last night as they hosted Saluda… Unfortunately Saluda took a 7-1 over the Red Devils… Madison Simpson had the lone goal for the Clinton… Clinton managed only 7 shots on goal to Saluda’s 20… The Red Devils will host Ninety Six tomorrow at 5:30
  • Tennis: Riverside 7 – CHS 0… Sorry no details available at this time.
  • JV Softball: CHS 7 – Whitmire 6… This was the 1st game of the season for the team
  • Var. Softball… CHS 14 – Whitmire 6… The Lady Red Devils softball team jumped out to a 10-0 lead at the end of the first inning and then went on to take a 14-6 win over Whitmire… Sorry no other details at this time… The Lady Red Devils even their record at 3-3… Both softball teams will travel to Whitmire tomorrow.

 

College Notes:

Baseball

  • Div. I Rankings:  The Div. I baseball rankings came out yesterday and the Gamecocks occupy the #1 spot in all the polls… The Yard Birds are the only undefeated team in D-I with a 15-0 record… In the USA Today Coaches’ Poll the balance of the top 5 are Florida State, Vanderbilt, Oregon State, & Virginia… Spots 6-10 are occupied by LSU, NC State, Cal State Fullerton, Oregon & Louisiana-Lafayette… Clemson checks in @ #18 in that poll but as high as 14 in another… I notice that the ACC & SEC have 6 of the top 10 teams
  • Clemson: The Tigers came off a great weekend of baseball as they swept Virginia Tech in a 3 game series… The Tigers will host Appalachian State tomorrow at 6:30
  • South Carolina: The Gamecocks also had a good weekend as they swept Brown in a 3-game series… The Gamecock pitching staff did not give up a run in that series and staff now has a 1.20 ERA striking out 140 while walking just
  • Div. II Rankings:  By the way in the D-II rankings, Lander University checks in at #4 with a 16-2 record.

Basketball:

  • Wofford 56  –  Western Carolina 53… Congratulations to the Wofford Terriers as the punched their ticket to the NCAA Basketball Tournament with a 56-53 won over West. Carolina to win the Southern Conference Title in Ashville last night… They join Coastal Carolina coached by former Clemson Coach Cliff Ellis as the only 2 teams from the state to make it to the “Bid Dance” so far…. Coastal won the Big South Tournament Championship over the weekend as they defeated Winthrop 76-61.

Sports Report for Monday, 3-10-2014

Local Sports Results:

CHS:

  • BB: RBHS 7 – CHS 6… The Red Devil baseball team traveled to River Bluff High School Saturday evening to finish their participation in the Carolina Ale House Classic… The Red Devils jumped out to an early lead but could not hold it as R.B scored a single run in the bottom of the 6th inning and then held on to take a 7-6 win… Coach Lee Atkinson said after the game “WE had plenty of base runners, just could not get a key hit in the late innings. We have a lot to work on next week before we head to Gilbert to open up our regular season (Sat. 3-15-14)” … Matthew Craven and Landon Allison each had 2 hits out of the total 8 hits produced by the Red Devils… One of Allison’s hits was a 2-run homer in the 2nd inning… Matthew Craven was selected to the “All-tournament Team” Hitting .636, 7 hits, 1 double, 5 RBIs and 4 stolen bases….   • Youth Wrestling… This past Saturday the Laurens Locomotives hosted the SC Youth Wrestling Association (SCYWA) Upper State Championships at LDHS… There were 243 wrestlers present divided into 5 age groupings and 61 weight classifications… Nine of the local Locomotive Team members placed in their respective weight classes… They were: 5&6 50: Gabi Carles 3rd,5&6 55: Leyden Gentry 2nd, 7&8 60: Joseph (JoJo) Carles 3rd, 7&8 75: Mason Parsons 2nd, 7&8 90: TJ Sullivan 1st, 9&10 65: Javi Carles 1st, 9&10 80: Myles Reppart 1st, 9&10 112: Damarcus Wright 1st and 11&12 170: Ben Parsons 2nd…. I notice that 3 of these young wrestlers are from the Carles family… Bet they have some interesting times at their house…  Congratulations to these young grapplers.

 College Notes:

  • Clemson basketball… The Clemson men’s basketball team suffered a tough loss in their final regular season game as they fell to Pittsburg 83-78 in overtime after leading by 5 with about 5 seconds to go in regulation… Clemson finished the regular season 19-11 overall and 10-8 in ACC play…. Yesterday the Tigers learned they will be seeded 6th in the ACC Tournament on Wednesday in Greensboro, NC… They will play at 9:00 pm on Thursday against the winner of the #11 Georgia Tech vs. #14 Boston College game on Wednesday… The game is to be shown on ESPN2.
  • Gamecock basketball: Men… The Gamecocks men’s’ basketball finished their regular season with a 74-62 win over Mississippi State in Starkville on Saturday… They finish their season with a 15-19 record and 5-13 in SEC play… SC will start SEC Tournament play on Wednesday March 12th as they will be seeded #13 and take on #12 seeded Auburn at 7:00 pm in the Georgia Dome
  • Gamecock basketball: Women…. The Lady Gamecock basketball team was defeated by Kentucky 68-58 in the SEC Women’s Tournament semi-finals on Saturday… The team finished their season with a 27-4 record… Tennessee went on the by Kentucky 71-70 to win the SEC Tournament Championship… The Gamecocks now await the NCAA Tournament selection which will take place next Monday.

Sports Report for Friday, 3-7-2014

Local Sports Results: Needless to say the weather yesterday caused the cancellation of everything related to any contest held outside and where spring sports are concerned, that is everything… But I do have a few other things related to the local high schools and colleges I can bring to you.

 

CHS:

  • Winter Sports Award… Back on Wednesday night CHS had their Winter Sports Award Ceremony… I have a list of some of the awards presented and they were: JV Girls Basketball – Hustler Award – Shanna Goforth,  JV Boys Basketball –Hustler Award – Ta’Shymen Boyd, Varsity Girls: Sportsmanship – Bredaisha Walls & MVP – Queena Cunningham, Varsity Boys: Sportsmanship – Dee Goggins & MVP – Tay Cook and finally All-Region Team: Maleaka Neal, Tay Cook & Shakily Smiley… Congratulation to all these young people.
  • JV Boys Baseball: The JV boys baseball team was suppose to be in action yesterday taking on Abbeville for the championship of the Lakelands JV Baseball Tournament and that game has been rescheduled for tomorrow at a time to be announced today.
  • New CHS Athletics Twitter account… Now one way you might be able to find out exactly when and where that JV game will be played tomorrow is at the new CHS Athletic Department’s Twitter Account… That account name is:  CHS Athletics @Clinton_Sports    Of course there is another Twitter Account that has been around for a while that I believe is operated by the CHS Athletic Booster Club and that account name is: Red Devils@ClintonSCSports   If you are a “tweeter” those 2 should pretty much keep you on top of CHS athletics.

PC

  • Baseball: The PC baseball team is on the road down in Port Charlotte, Fla. taking on South Dakota State today and Northeastern & Maine tomorrow in a doubleheader.

Clemson

  • Baseball: The Tigers host Virginia Tech as they start ACC play today, tomorrow & Sunday… game times are 6:30 today and 1:00 on Sat. & Sunday

South Carolina:

  • Basketball: USC AD Ray Tanner has suspended men’s basketball Coach Frank Martin for Saturday’s game at Mississippi State for “inappropriate verbal communication as it relates to the well-being of our student-athletes” during a time out during the recent Florida game in Columbia… My dad would have whipped me for that kind of talk.
  • Baseball: The undefeated Gamecock baseball team will host Brown in a 3 game series starting tonight at 7:30… Saturday & Sunday’s games are scheduled to start at 4:00 and 12:30 respectively.

 

FYI / Community Interest:

  • Free baseball Coaches’ Clinic… On Sunday Coach Dale Nelson will be hosting at free coaches’ clinic at the LDHS baseball field from 2-4 pm… The clinic is open to all Dixie Youth, Little League and travel ball coaches… It will be a great opportunity for coaches to pick up some tips and especially beneficial to newer coaches.
  • Travel Basketball Try-Outs…  Coach Yoneko Washington of LDHS will be holding try-outs for for 2 more travel basketball teams this Sunday from 5:30-7:30 at the LDHS main gym… One team is for boys in the 4th and 5th grades while the other team will be composed of girls in the 3rd-6th grade… For more information please contact Coach Yoneko Washington at ykwashington@laurens55.org or Melvin Allen at (864) 876-2526.
  • Laurens YMCA Registration for Spring Sports… The Laurens YMCA is registering youth for Tee Ball and Dixie Youth Baseball… Tee Ball & Dixie Youth is open to those ages 3-15 and registration closes March 17th… For more information about these call he Laurens YMCA at 984-2626 or go to the Y’s website www.laurensymca.org.
