Real Radio 860 WLBG Sports Report: 4-5-13

Welcome this is your Real Radio 860 WLBG sports for Friday and it’s brought to you by Presbyterian College Athletics…. Last Tuesday the PC baseball team hosted the USC Upstate Spartans and PC had a 7-5 lead going into the 8th inning but the Spartans put 8 runs on the board in the 8th to take a 13-7 win… PC will host Campbell in a 3 game weekend series starting today at 3:00… The Camels are one of the better teams in the Big South sporting a 25-5 / 6-3 record while the Blue Hose are 18-12 / 5-1… Should be an interesting series.

Local sports: Most all local sports were cancelled yesterday due to the weather

CHS:

  • Winter Sports Awards: last week CHS had its Winter Sports Award Ceremony… In boys’ basketball, Kenyon Brown was named the MVP and for the girls basketball it was Gabby Bates…. There were other awards handed out and to see those click on the following: Winter Sports Ceremony
  • Soccer: Weather permitting, the boys’ soccer team is scheduled to be in action today at Brookland-Cayce H.S. in the Nike Palmetto Cup… They are scheduled to take on Fort Mill this morning at 10:00 and Westwood at 5:00 this afternoon.

LDHS:

  • Softball: The Lady Raider softball team is scheduled to be in action in the Aiken Triple Crown Tournament today & tomorrow in Aiken, SC… Their 1st opponent is Spring Valley this afternoon at 5:00 and then Midland Valley tonight at 8:30… They then will return to action tomorrow morning at 10:45 against Daniel H.S… There will be more games after that tomorrow against opponents and at times to be announced.

  • Baseball: Clinton 11 – Westside 3 … The Clinton Red Devils got back on the winning path last night as they took an 11-3 win over the Rams of Westside in the Carolina Classic Spring Break tournament over in Pendleton… Clinton got on the board first putting 4 runs on the board in the bottom of the 2nd inning… Dalton Foster & Hunter steward started the inning off with singles followed by Bradley Templeton drawing a walk to load the bases… When Trey Childress also drew a walk it scored D. Foster… Josh Simmons then flied out but deep enough to score Stewart… Justin Foster then singled and Templeton came home… Austin Wooten then singled scoring Childress… Westside picked up their runs in the top of the 3rd making it 4-3… Clinton added 2 runs in the 4th … Singles by J. Foster, Landon Allison and a walk to M. Craven set the stage for D. Foster to drive in 2 runs on a double… The Red Devils added 4 more runs in the 5th inning… Clinton received 4 walks in the inning and key hits by Colby Templeton, B. Pitts and L. Allison led to the runs… Clinton picked up its final run in the 6th inning… B. Pitts walked, Charles McKinney doubled and then L.   • Soccer: Brookland-Cayce 9 – Clinton 1… The Red Devil soccer team started play in the Nike Palmetto Cup hosted by Brookland-Cayce H.S.  Their opening round opponent was the host school Brookland –Cayce Bearcats… The Bearcats entered the match with a single loss and left the match the same way as they defeated Clinton 9-1… Madison Simpson had the lone goal for the Red Devils… The Red Devils are scheduled to be back in action today at 10:00am as they take on Fort Mill at B.C.H.S.

CHS:

  • Baseball: Emerald 9 – Clinton 6… The Clinton baseball team continued play in the Carolina Classic Spring Break Tournament over in Pendleton yesterday afternoon taking on the Emerald Vikings… The Red Devil bats were more alive than the night before putting 6 runs on the board the only problem is that the Vikings put up 9 to take a 9-6 win… Emerald jumped on top in the 1st inning as they put 2 on the board… Clinton responded with a single run in the bottom of the 1st … Matt Craven and Brandon Pitts both walked and Landon Allison was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs.. Dalton Foster then had a sacrifice fly to score Craven… Unfortunately the other 2 runners were left stranded… Clinton got 2 runs in the bottom of the 4th to go ahead 3-2 when Colby Templeton led off with a double and 2 batters later scored when Hunter Stewart also doubled… Josh Simmons then singled but was caught trying to steal 2nd… However, during the play Stewart scored…  Emerald retook the lead scoring 4 runs in the top of the 5th to make it 6-3… Clinton got 2 of the runs back in their half of the 5th as Craven led off drawing a walk and later scored when D. Foster doubled… His courtesy runner Charles McKinney later scored on a Viking error… In the top of the 6th inning, Emerald got those 2 runs back plus 1 more to make it 9-5… The Red Devils picked up their final run in the bottom of the 6th inning when H.   • Baseball: Laurens 9 – Eastside 4… The Laurens Raiders continued play yesterday afternoon in the Carolina Classic at Eastside and they defeated the host team 9-4… Laurens struck first in the top of the 1st when Di’Markus Sanders singled and Christian Burton reached on an error… Cody Smiley then doubled driving them in… Laurens added another run in the 3rd when Thomas Jones singled and Trey Finley drove him in with a triple… Laurens added 4 more in the 4th inning all after 2 were out.. D. Sanders singled, C. Burton walked and C. Smiley brought in Sanders with a single…Shannon Smith then tripled to bring in Burton & Smiley… Smith scored when T. Welcome this is your Real Radio 860 WLBG sports for Tuesday and it’s brought to you by Presbyterian College Athletics… The Blue Hose baseball team had a good weekend as they took 2 of 3 from Furman… They won Thursday’s game 10-8 but lost Fridays at home 3-8… PC took the rubber game of the series on Saturday in Greenville 6-2… PC’s record now stands at 18-11 overall… The Blue Hose host USC-Upstate today at 3:00 pm.

  • Baseball: Pendleton 2 – Clinton 0… The Clinton baseball team opened play in the Carolina Classic Spring Break Tournament over at Pendleton H.S. last night as they took on the host Pendleton Bulldogs… Clinton just could not get the offense in gear as Pendleton took a 2-0 win… Pendleton got 1 run in the 1st inning and a Clinton error had a large part to do with that… Pendleton’s other run came in the 3rd inning and 2 singles and a wild pitch were the main contributors to the run scoring… Clinton did threaten in the 4th inning having runners on the corners with 2 outs but just could not get the key hit… Both teams had 4 hits each on the night… Bradley Templeton had 2 of the Red Devils 4 hits… Templeton took the loss giving up the 2 runs (only 1 of which was earned) on 4 hits while striking out 3 and walking 2… Click on the following for more game statistics: 2013-4-1__CHS-0__Pendleton-2   Clinton will take on Emerald at 4:00pm today in their 2nd game of the tournament.
  • Soccer: Broome 10 – CHS 1… Last Friday the CHS soccer team traveled to Broome and the Centurions took a 10-1 over the Red Devils… Madison Simpson had Clinton’s only goal… The Red Devil offense managed 4 shots on goal to Broome’s 19… Seth Anderson and Jose Gayton combined for 5 saves in goal for Clinton… Clinton is now 1-8 overall and 0-4 in region play.

  • Baseball: Clinton 15 – Broome 1… The Clinton Red Devils traveled to Broome to take on the Centurions last Friday night and the bus ride back was a happy one as they smashed the Centurions 15 -1 … Clinton scored 7 runs in the 1st inning and were never threatened starting pitcher Justin Foster scattered 2 hits while striking out 3 and walking 3 to get the complete 5 inning win…  The only run Broome managed was a solo shot in the 4th inning… Clinton more than batted around in the big 1st inning… In addition to a couple of walks and a hit batter, Colby Templeton, Dalton Foster, Landon Allison, Hunter Stewart , Josh Simmons and Matt Craven all had hits… The Red Devils added 4 more in the 4th and 5th innings… In the 4th inning, Kendall Pitts had a 2 run homer… By the time the last out was recorded, Clinton had pounded out 17 hits with Landon Allison going 4 -4 with 2 doubles and 4 RBIs while scoring 2 runs… Click on the following to see more statistics on the game: 2013-3-29__CHS-15__Broome-1     The Red Devils will be in action the first part of this week as they participate in the Carolina Classic Spring Break Tournament over at Pendleton H.S….. Welcome this is your Real Radio 860 WLBG sports for Friday and it’s brought to you by Presbyterian College Athletics… The Blue Hose baseball team took the 1st game in a 3 games series with Furman yesterday by a score of 10-8… The series shifts back to Clinton today for a 3:00pm start… Saturday the 3rd game of the series will take place in Greenville with a 4:00 pm 1st pitch… By the way, go to www.GoBluhose.com and look for the recap on yesterday’s game and you will see former Laurens Academy Crusader Brandon Martin in a key photo.

  • Softball: Clinton 6 – Broome 5… The Lady Red Devils hosted the Lady Centurions of Broome last night and good news as the Red Devils picked up their 2nd win of the season defeating Broome 6-5… Clinton lead 5-0 going into the 3rd inning and Broome score enough runs to tie the game in the 5th inning… Brittany Templeton had a walk-off single in the bottom of the 7th inning scoring Kayleigh Pitts from 3rd for the win… Coach Nickie Templeton was glad to pick up the win noting that Jessica Wood had a great performance on the mound… She also noted the fact that Clinton left bases loaded 4 different times without scoring a run… The team record is now 2-11 / 1-4 and will be off next week returning to play Tuesday, April 9th when they travel to Chester.

  • Baseball: Laurens 16 – Clinton 6… Round 2 of the Clinton – Laurens baseball series took place last night at Laurens and the Raiders made a sweep of this series as they defeated Clinton 16-6 in 5 innings… Laurens got 3 runs in the 2nd inning the first a solo homer by Shannon Smith… After an out, a walk to Hammer Walker and a single by Trae Coleman coupled with a Clinton error allowed Walker to score and Coleman to move on to 3rd… The next Raider reached on an error and then a fielder’s choice by Di’markus Sanders scored Coleman… The Raiders threatened to blow the game open in the 3rd inning as they scored 5 runs on 2 hits, aided by 2 hit batters 3 walks and a Clinton error… Clinton did not go quietly as they came back and scored 5 runs in the top of the 4th inning… a single, double and walk loaded the bases for Landon Allison who unloaded them as he put a 2-1 pitch over the right field fence for a grand slam… Clinton added 1 more run before the inning was over to make the score 8-5 Laurens… Laurens answered with 4 runs of their own in the 4th inning off of a hit, 2 walks and 3 wild pitches… Clinton put a single run [Read more...]

  • Boys Tennis: CHS 7 – Chapman 0… On Tuesday the Clinton tennis team hosted the Chapman Panthers and the Red Devils took a 7-0 win in region play… Austin MacMillan, Alec Powell, Jay Peay, Isaac MacMillan & Robert Powell all had wins in singles action… A.   • Boys Tennis: CCES 7 – Clinton 0… Then yesterday Red Devil tennis team traveled to Christ Church yesterday to take on a perennially strong Cavalier team and unfortunately the tables were turned as the score was just the opposite from Tuesday as Christ Church took a 7-0 win handing the Clinton only its 2nd loss of the season both out of region play… Click on following for match details: 2013-3-27__CHS-0_CCES-7
  • Soccer: Chapman 6 – CHS 0… Back on Tuesday the Red Devil soccer team traveled to Inman to take on Chapman and the ride home most likely felt a little longer than the ride up because Chapman took a 6-0 win over Clinton… Chapman’s offense 22 shots on goal while their defense held Clinton to just 1… Jerry Reaves and Jose Gayton combined for 11 saves in goal… Clinton’s record is now 1-7 overall and 0-3 in region play.
  • Golf 3-26-13… Also back on Tuesday the Red Devil golf team travelled to Greer for a 3-way match with Greer & Berea… When the last putt rolled in the cup, Clinton had defeated both other teams shooting a 182.. Greer finished 2nd just 3 shots behind with a 185 and Berea 3rd with a 199… Eddie Bagwell of Berea was match medalist shooting a 39… Nate Moody led Clinton with a 41… Zach Davis shot a 45 and both Michael Mann & Harrison Fisher both shot 48. 

LDHS:

  • Golf: Laurens Raider Invitational… Despite the high winds back on Monday, the Laurens Raider Golf Invitational went on at Lakeside C.C….  Nine varsity and nine JV teams participated..   • Golf 3-26-13… On Tuesday the Raider golf team traveled to Smithfield C.C. to participate in a 4 team match… Easley took the win shooting a 163 with the Raiders finishing 2nd with a 177… Woodmont was 3rd with a 179 and Westside 4th shooting 197… Laurens’ Ryan Wright was match medalist shooting a 40… Laurens & Easley JV teams also played each other and Easley took the win 162-209… Click on the following to find out [Read more...]

  • Softball: Chapman 13 – CHS 1… The Lady Red Devil softball team traveled to Chapman last night and their defensive woes continue as they Chapman took a 13-1 win… Coach Templeton said that defensive errors were again the Red Devils biggest problem as they forced Jessica Wood to have to throw just too many pitches…. Brittany Templeton led the team with 2 hits and Wood had the Red Devils only RBI in the 2nd inning.
  • Baseball: CHS 2 – Chapman 1… Better news for the baseball team as they defeated Chapman at home by a score of 2-1… Chapman jumped out first putting up their only run in the 2nd inning… Clinton tied the game in the 3rd inning when Matt Craven singled and later stole 2nd… Brandon Pitts then singled driving in Craven… Clinton got the go ahead run in the 5th inning B. Pitts singled with 1 out… Colby Templeton followed with single putting runners on 1st & 2nd base with 1 out… A wild pitch then allowed each runner to move up a base… Dalton Foster then grounded out but Pitts was able to score on the play making it 2-1… Austin Wooten gets the complete game win giving up only 4 hits while striking out 7 and walking 2… Brandon Pitts led the Red Devils at the plate going 2-3… For more statistics on the game, click on the following: 2013-3-26__CHS-2__Chapman-1

  • Softball: LDHS 10 – Woodmont 6… In region softball action at LDHS last night, the Lady Raiders took a 10-6 win over the Lady Wildcats of Woodmont… Woodmont had a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the 4th inning when Laurens tied the game with 2 runs of their own…  Elizabeth Carmen  walked and Maria Williamson followed with a single that was misplayed for an error by the Woodmont outfielder allowing Carmen to score and Williamson to go to  3rd… Williamson scored when Jordan Henderson singled… Woodmont jumped back on top with 4 runs in the top of the 5th inning…. The lady Raider bats came alive in the bottom of the 5th inning as they pounded out 8 runs on 9 hits to take the lead for good… Tara Bond started the inning off with a single and the next 7 Raiders all had hits… Woodmont then finally got an out before Bond had another hit in the inning… Logan Hill picked up the win as she came in to pitch in the top of the 5th inning relieving Allison Foreback… Foreback came back [Read more...]

Welcome this is your Real Radio 860 WLBG sports for Tuesday and it’s brought to you by Presbyterian College Athletics… The PC baseball team took 2 of 3 from Winthrop last weekend up in Rock Hill to run their season record to 15-10 and 5-1 in Big South Action… They lost 1-3 on Friday and took both games in a doubleheader on Saturday by scores of 4-3 in 10 innings and 9-3 in the 2nd game… The Blue Hose start a 3 game series with Furman in Greenville on Thursday at 6:00 pm… The 2nd game will be on Friday at PC with 1st pitch at 3:00.. The series finale will be Saturday in Greenville.

  • JV Baseball: Union County 10 – CHS 4… Back on Friday the Union County JV baseball team defeated Clinton 10-4 handing the Red Devils their 1st loss of the season… Union had a 6 run 3rd inning that was the difference in the game.. The leading hitters for Clinton were Chandler Todd who went 3-4 and Delshun Young who went 2-3
  • Soccer: Union County 4 – CHS 2… Also in action last Friday the Union County soccer team took a 4-2 win over Clinton… Madison Simpson and Rodolfo Orozco each had a goal for the Red Devils.. Union had 19 shots on goal to Clinton’s 9… Jose Gayton made 12 saves in goal… Clinton is now 1-6 overall and 0-2 in region play. 

LDHS:

  • Tennis: JL Mann 7 – Laurens 0… Last Thursday the Raider tennis team faced off against JL Mann and the Patriots took a 7-0 win over the Raiders.
  • Boys Soccer: LDHS 4 – Westside 2… The Laurens Raiders boys’ soccer team was on the road last Friday traveling to Anderson to take on the Westside Rams… Good news in that the Raiders took a 4-2 win over the Rams… Four different Raiders had the goals… They were Hernan Salinas, Chris Molina, Henry Garcia and Esgar Diaz… The Raiders are now 3-4 overall and 2-3 in region action.

  • Baseball: Union County 6 – CHS 5… The Clinton baseball team traveled to Union County last Friday night and Union picked up a run in the bottom of the 7th to take a 6-5 win in region action… Union got a run in the 1st inning and 3 in the 3rd to take a 4-0 lead… Clinton got on the board with 2 runs in the top of the 4th inning… Brandon Pitts led the inning off with a single and moved to 2nd when the next batter grounded out… Dalton Foster the singled scoring Pitts and he took 2nd on the throw… Kendall Pitts then singled scoring Foster… Clinton picked up their final 3 runs in the top of the 5th … Josh Simmons walked and Justin Foster sacrificed him to 2nd.. An error allowed Matt Craven to reach 2nd and Simmons to score… Colby Templeton later singled scoring Craven and he took 2nd on the throw…. An error by Union later allowed C. Templeton to score making it 5-4 Red Devils… Union came right back and tied the game in their half of the 5th inning with a single run to make it 5-5… Union County got the wining run with 2 out in the bottom of the 7th of a walk and a double… Justin Foster took the loss giving up the 6 runs (all earned) on 8 hits while striking out 3 and walking 5… The Red Devils only had 5 hits on the night by 5 different players… Clinton is now 4-7 overall and 2-2 in region play… They will be back in action Tuesday as they host Chapman… Click on the following for more statistics on the game: 2013-3-22__CHS-5__Union-6
  • Softball:  Union County 15 – CHS 1… Also last Friday the Lady Red Devil softball team hosted Union County and some defensive errors helped Union take a 15-1 win in 5 innings…. Clinton got its lone run in the 3rd inning when Jessica Wood drove in Allison Oxner… Clinton had 7 hits with Brittany Templeton, Cassie Nichols and Wood getting 2 each… Wood pitched the entire game and Coach Nickie Templeton said she pitched well but the errors were just too much to overcome.

LDHS:

  • Baseball: LDHS 9 – Westside 0… The Laurens Raider baseball team hosted the Rams of Westside in region baseball action Friday night… The Raiders upped their record to 8-2 overall and 4-2 in region play with a 9-0 win over the Rams at Ed Prescott Field… The Raiders got 3 runs in the 1st inning when with 2 out Trey Finley singled and then reached 2nd on a wild pitch… Grayson Bailes walked and Christian Burton then picked up his 1st of 4 singles on the night driving in Finley and moving Bailes to third as he took 2nd on the throw…. A Ram error then allowed Bailes & Burton to score…. Laurens scored their final 6 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning… In the inning a walk, hit batter, Westside error and singles by Shannon Smith, Thomas Jones, Cody Smiley, T. Finley and 2 by C. Burton were the reasons behind the 6 runs… Tanner Adair got the complete game win as he scattered 4 hits while striking out 4 and walking 2….
